MG MGF Technical - Not Starting

Can any body help with reguards to my Mgf v v c not starting after it's been raining one spray of the old wd 40 and away it goes.Does any body no how I can cure this problem many thanks
Paul Midgley

Paul,

Lots of possible reasons of course, but it's often cured by a new set of leads. After several sets of leads were replaced under warranty on my VVC, I finally went for magnecor leads from Brown & Gammons:

Magnecor high performance ignition leads - 8mm HIGH PERFORMANCE VVC
Price: 54.95 EACH
Stock No: BGF753

Agree with the above but also check the plugs are at minimum gap 0.8mm.

Yep,had the same problem a couple of years ago and a change of leads solved the problem.

I checked through the followings:-

1) HT leads
2) Spark plugs
3) coolant temperature sensor

Number 3 would show up in Testbook. The computer software/system they use at Rover.

But I am sure going through number 1 and 2 would solve most problems.

>3) coolant temperature sensor

you mean inlet air temperature sensor, do you ?

Thanks for all your comments I'am new to the m.g.f but have own an m.g.b for 20 years .Just a little confused on 2 issuses 1 were is the air temp switch 2 when spraying wd40 I dont spray any were near the spark plugs many thanks Paul
Paul Midgley

1 were is the air temp switch

You got no switches, but loads of analogue sensors. NTC resistor base (IMO).

The air inlet sensor is located RH behind the throttle body.

Suggest to get a workshop manual asap to see the huge electronics differences between the good old MGB and the MGF.

If you can spare 45mins change your plugs yearly.

The VVC uses 2 coils, both of which are handily located directly under the air vents in the boot (so they get soaked).

I had something similar, though my VVC would start when it was wet or cold, but not when both (ie when misty or foggy). Have a look at the coils and try damp proofing them, that should help.

Also, if you're VVC is at the 30K / 3 to 4 year point, I suggest getting the spark plugs (and possibly the leads) changed.
