MG MGF Technical - sound deadening material

I was reading the instructions on how to install a K&N and I see that there is some sound deadening material between the engine bay and the drivers ears.

This is, of course, an entirely sensible thing to have on a car, and so I immediately started wondering how the car would sound without it.

Has anyone ever tried just removing it, or is this a stupid thing to do? It's not also a barrier to exploding petrol tanks engulfing people as well, is it?

I tried it after fitting my K&N just to check everything was OK. Tthe engine sounded like a bag of spanners at tickover.

The other thing is heat, you could probably cook your dinner on the rear shelf if the insulation was left out.
