MG MGF Technical - Stalling & hissing sound

Coming back from lunch yesterday, took a couple of attempts to get the car started - kept stalling when left to idle. On the journey back I noticed a distinct lack of power and a hissing noise coming from the engine bay. Got to work to take a look; the car will idle way higher than normal, fluctuating at about 1000-1200 rpm then often stall. Removed the engine bay cover and had a peer inside, the K&N is firmly attached (last time I took the car in, it was almost falling off). The noise sounds like an air line with a hole in.

Phoned Diamond Hatfield, who can't even take a look until Friday. (So booked up, they arent even doing any F servicing until after Easter.)

Any ideas until then?

Hi Ed,

There are quite a few rubber hoses from various places ending at the inlet mainfold. One is for the brake servo ,2 others for evacuation of gases from within crankcase ,one for MAP sensor (if 1,8MPi)and suerly one or two extra not mentioned here ,(donīt have the manual at hand at the moment ). I think You will find out where this leak comes from by just letting the engine run and check under the boot. Access is not that good without taking the engine cover away so probably You have to do that. (This is the cover underneath the rear window shelf.) It is a typical fault when the engine gets extra air via a leakage, hissing sound and down on performance. Donīt drive for too long with this as even if the MEMS compensates for the lean mixture the cat can go extreamly hot .

Try a different dealer if you cannot find the source of the 'leak' yourself? Priests in Chesham are pretty good - don't know what their lead times are like ATM though.
