MG MGF Technical - Switzerland Verkehrsprufungen

For all Swiss and German Forum Members

I am British who has just imported a British registered MGF VVC into Switzerland.

1 The car went for its test here in Luzern and there are a number of issues around the need for an Eligibility statement for items that are not part of the original car.

The items are listed below.

2 These parts have been fitted for many years, were declared under UK certificate of insurance and the vehicle was subject to an annual UK vehicle inspection.

3 As no doubt you are aware the UK being a motorsport nation, upgrades are part of the culture with lots of respected companies producing motor parts but here in Switzerland it does not matter. A COC is required for each and every item not on the original car.

I have added some comments

-headlight cover, Eligibility Statement ORIGINAL MG ROVER PART. NO ORIGINAL COC AVAILABLE
-air filter not original, Eligibility Statement PIPERCROSS. ONE OF BEST KNOWN FILTER MANUFACTURERS IN WORLD AND THOUSANDS OF THESE FILTERS FITTED TO MGFS AND CARS AROUND THE WORLD. THE ONE I HAVE IS A 'PIPERCROSS VIPER'.
-Front brake, pliers, brake discs (Mike Satur) are not original, Eligibility Statement BIGGER DISKS AND 4 POT CALIPERS TO REPLACE ORIGINAL 2 POT AND SMALLER DISCS WITH LESS STOPPING POWER. SEVERAL HUNDRED FITTED TO MGFS AROUD THE WORLD. MUCH BETTER BRAKING.
-Steel braided brake lines front and rear, Eligibility Statement REPLACED THE ORIGINAL RUBBER ONES. STEEL IS MUCH BETTER AS RUBBER EXPANDS UNDER PRESSURE
-Front spoiler , front and sharp edge not permitted, either remove or DTC Survey AGAIN SEVERAL HUNDRED FITTED, MAINLY IN UK, HOLLAND AND GERMANY
-Exhaust muffler (Super Sports), Eligibility Statement MANY FITTED IN UK TO REPLACE ORIGINAL MILD STEEL MUFFLERS.
-Rims with spacers (Mike Satur), Eligibility Statement, DTC advice for spacers I UNDERSTAND UNUSUAL IN SWITZERLAND BUT HUNDREDS FITTED TO MGFs. IT IS LESS A SPACER (IE WIDENING WHEEL TRACK) BUT WHAT IT DOES DO IS ALLOW DIFFERENT TYPES OF WHEELS TO BE FITTED WITH A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT WHEELS NUT SPACINGS.

Any comments about how to get a Certificate of Conformaty or do they already exist?

All the best

I imported a New UK Spec MGF into Switzerland.

A copy of the original UK C of C is available from an outfit that bought all the data from the Administrators. http://www.mgrccsrvices.com for £150.

With the CofC, variations for the Swiss Spec required a 'Swiss EEC', LHD Headlights and a Kilometer Speedo head.

As you say, Swiss (and German) requiremnts are that you cannot modify or fit non original OEM parts without a CofC.
The CofC is issued after approval by TUV (UK VOSA) following a Certification process. viz parts from Mike Satur etc.etc are not approved and cannot be fitted to Swiss Cars.

Thanks Geoff

I nailed the car's COC before I left the UK. No isssues on KLM or the headlights (which I changed before I left).

I have touched base with Dieter in Germany and with a Swiss Test House.

I can see that I will end up replacing these parts with news ones which have COCs.. aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The only sensible or useful things to come out of Switzerland are Toblerone and cuckoo clocks (and Orson Welles was wrong on that one!)

A further thought - if they won't allow modified cars to be registered, do they also not let them in as visitors? Bye-bye thoughts of a touring holiday if the car's illegal!

No problem taking and using an EEC Legally Registered car BUT if you were involved in an accident, then the car may be considered UnRoadworthy.
My good friend Andi Gloor in Reihen, Basel runs the MGCC CH F Register. He may be able to help with spares. f.register@mgcc.ch or 061 641 76 09
