MG MGF Technical - TF at night

For the first time I got to drive at night in the TF. Now that is an experience. The new headlights are stunningly bright. But they have a very sudden cut off. So much so that anything outside the beam is pitch black.

Now my question is given a flat road, how far forward should the beam cut off? mine seems a tad too close at a quess 50m or so.

Any ideas how to check and set up these light?

My TF headlight used to be perfect until some w*nker shot out in front of me on a roundabout - Now the nearside light may as well be in the boot for the good it does. Back to driving with sh*te lights at night - another reason to just leave the TF in the garage.

Sounds about right to me, but I've never really measured it, if you know what I mean. Besides normally too busy smiling...

So how can we F'ers upgrade our lights to super-duper TF ones?

It has already been done of course. One of the German lads (Dieter will remind us who it is) had some damage on the front of his F and so took the opportunity to pop over to the UK, buy the TF front bumper and lights and simply replaced the whole front end. I heard the story also from Tech-Speed's Roy Forde as he knows this chap from way back.

A number of folks (myself included) have started to wonder whether it would be possible to 'hybridise' the MGF and mgtf lamps - ie to remove the projector lenses from the TF and incorporate them into the F lamp assembly.

I think this is *possible* but an enormous challenge to get the finished result looking 'right'.

A cheaper but slightly illegal solution is to fit 100W Philips Rallye bulbs in the main beams. Costs about £25 and takes 10 minutes.

So I am not alone....

Well for my 2p I think I would rather have the slightly dim lights of the F than the total lack of visability outside 50m.

Just think from memory 315ft is stopping at 70 (okay not with 160 brakes) but that is still 100m. So when I finally get past the 600mile run in, I will still need to be slow at night.. Doesn't sound right to me.

I've driven my 135 a fair bit in the dark, with no real problems. Being used to a Rover 400, whose lights were s**t, I find it much better.

But then I never drove an F before the change to TF....

Bloody hell.....how did he manage to get hold of the parts? We can't, nor can much of the network :-(

SO that explains why there's a shortage of front ends for the TF! My new TF is delayed (again) as MGR can't find enough fronr bumpers to keep the production line rolling.

S'pose patience is a virtue though?
