MG MGF Technical - Whats That Noise??

OK. i need some advice chaps. My MGF has recently developed a "knocking" noise but iam not too sure where its coming from. It seems to happen only when i take my foot off the gas and particularly in the lower gears, the lower the gear/speed the more noticeable it is. Strangely, this is not constant, and happens as and when. The car drives, brakes and steers perfectly normal but what is this creaky knocking? Theres no loose luggage or items in either boot and the noise is definitely car related. Thx in advance for any suggestions.

Cant help mate I think you are going to have to track it down yourself!

I have 2 really irritating rattles...one at idle when warm sounds like its coming from behind the passenger seat ...but the other side of the bulk head

and another really really irritating buzz right behind my head at 3000 rpm....aarrrrrrrggg!

Neil

This might sound daft, I thought it did. But this weekend I was changing my steering wheel, whilst sat there and after somebody had mentioned it to me before as a possible source of one of my maddening rattles. I thought I would see if the bolts holding the roof clips may be loose. YES they were very loose, now I no longer have one of my rattles.!

Neil the one at 3000 rpm, I also have but it seams to have also gone, but it is very intermittent so I am expecting its return.

Hope this helps, Andrew.

Andrew is that the roof clips which hold the roof to the screen surround ...or is it those little clips that hold the rear part of the roof to the rear transom!!...now i could beleive that they rattle!

There's another good one that was irritating me. It seemed like the steering column, but sometimes occured on the other side of the car.
2x 48MM exhaust clamps sorted the problem.

Its the cross-member underneath the dash, on a lot of MGFs this becomes loose with time and creaks, rattles, and annoys the hell out of you.

If you have a warrantee Rover will sort it, if not you can save yourself £2500 with the exhaust clamps.

Neil, The ones that are at the top of the screen surround, and it was the bits attached to the car not the roof. But they may also be loose.!

Well, i think ive narrowed it down to be coming from the wheels somewhere. The "knocks" seem to be speed related i.e. in sync with the speed of the car as if something was attached to the wheel and striking something every revolution. Could this be wheel bearings? Like i said, the car drives fine, just dont want anything falling off! Certainly has taken my mind off that 3000rpm buzz i also sometimes get!

I found a place for a rattle i have 96 model F and the knocking noise was coming from the dipstick. Well to be acurate the braket that holds the dipstick steady. It had snapped for an unknown reason and was making a hell of a din.

It's the pram in the passanger seat which you should worry about !
