MG MGF Technical - Wheels & Tires
Fitting new radial tires to the original mg td wheels can be a great problem, resulting in wheel bounce which no amount of balancing will correct. Current tires are wider than the MG rim and radial tires are very sensitive to out of round rims.(A very common problem since the MG rims are very thin when compared to modern wheels.) Installing the normal bias ply tire will solve the bounce problem but does not solve the availabilty and cost of special order tires. The best solution seems to be this; remove the original rim from the central hub and replace with new, modern rims. The new rims would allow the new wider tires to be fitted and allow the use of tubeless tires. Now we have wheels that match our car (ie. original hubs) and allow us to drive on modern tires. Has any one done this? What wheel rim was used? |
