MG TD TF 1500 - 1955 MG TF back running

In very late 2002 I stored my 1955 MG TF 1550 in Australia and worked on ways to get to to the USA. In March this year I finally got the ball rolling and it took a journey almost all the way around the world to my place in Buffalo, NY.

Immediately into the workshop, lots of pats orders to Jeff Zorn at LBCarCo and all the brakes are rebuilt.

Today based on forum advice I added a Carter fuel pump with included filter, added a shut-off valve into the fuel line immediately as the fuel line arrives at the chassis frame. All temporarily secured I added fuel to the tank and verified the new fuel pump is working.

I pulled the starter and there was an attempt to fire, so I added the new spark plugs and believe it or not, with a little of "hand across the carb intakes" to act as a choke it fired up and dropped into a disturbed idle.

After a couple of minutes Iclosed the choke and it was idling and able to rev easily, Off the elevated stands and I was able to roll it out o f the workshop and start it easily.

Jumped in, all gears worked as I ran up and down the driveways and took one quick spin around the block.

Here we are just over 3 months short of 14 years later and it is running, it is not running perfectly, but it is running. I have a nice 50PSI oil pressure, temp never went more than mid-scale despite the 85+ degree day. No smoke, no oil leaks, well, that did not exist 14 years ago. Ammeter shows positive when revved.

Thanks to all on the forum for answering my questions over the last few months, now I need to do the tidying up and get into position to license it here in NY as a historical vehicle.

If I sound excited I am, I love this car.

More to follow as I get this right up to speed.

I share your excitement for TF's. They are great MG's. Keep on working and keep us posted.

Con Grats. I too share your excitement as I also just got my TD up and running on a rebuild. what a day it was.
Its hard not to grin from ear to ear.
I collected mods and info on how to's from this fine site for the last 10 years waiting for the day I would dive in and rebuild. Could not have done it without the advice from here on this site.

Shinny side up mate !

Back working on the car today, got a list of things to do over the weekend.

1. Close up 'tickler' holes in carbs as 'tickler' is gone.

2. Figure out how to wire in the backup fuel pump, I want to be able to select main/backup easily.

3. Route new overflow pipes.

4. Investigate difficult cold starting, once warm it starts righ up.

Gave it a bath today, set tire pressures correctly and few more zippy trips around the block.

Attached a photo, it is not concurs, it is a car to drive.

Looks great Peter, I see it still has it's old Victorian (Oz) number plates on.

Yes Don, the VIC plates from when it went from NSW to Melbourne. As winter is approaching I won't pursue historic registration until March next year, ready for summer driving season. We have 5 months of cold here, garage is heated so I can work on it.

Congrats on getting your TF on the road again. It's been a long wait.

Moss sells replacement ticklers. I have them on my TF float bowl lids.
