MG TD TF 1500 - 1955 TF Wood Kit Question
Hello fellas, Paul Jennings here. I've been around for a few years and am registered on other forums, but never posted anything on this site. I have a question about where can a wood kit of sorts can be bought for a 1954/55 TF? I'm not sure the wood is in question on the car I'm trying to make a deal on, but would like to have this information just in case. Thanks in advance. PJ |

Paul - Not sure what you mean by "kit", but will have to replace almost all of the wood for my '54 TF and have purchased the replacement wood through Abingdon Spares. I'm at work and can not access the address for their web-site, but on it you will find their catalog and the prices for each piece of wood you may need. Hope this helps -- John |

Steve Cannon in Greensboro NC makes most of the kits on the market, and sells direct, although you may get some percentage off through a vendor such as the Little British Car Co. Classic Wood, 1006 Raleigh St, Greensboro, NC 27405, PH: 336-691-1344 Dallas |

Thanks Dallas, That's a lot closer to me. I'll put their address and number in the files. I've bought parts from LBCC. Good people. PJ |

I got most of my timber from LBCC but some timber from Moss. Most likely LBCC and Moss use same suppler. I also used Abingdon (usually better quality stuff but more expensive) I also been told that some wood comes from Seabrook, but have no experience with them. Ether way nothing ever fits right and be ready for cutting, sanding and fitting. If not done so check Dave Braun website http://www.dbraun99.com/mgtd15470 This is one of the best site for mg td restoration reference. Boris |

I trust that you folks know that Jeff (LBCC) is a Moss distributor. |

If you do end up replacing the wood, a belt sander is a godsend. |

Hey Paul, If you’re going to rebuild the wood in your tub, There are a couple of modifications you should consider. These concern replacing the wood screws that were used in the factory wood, with metal screws that don’t actually hold in the wood, but rather at the back of the timber. Here’s one good and recent thread, on the mounting of the door latch:- http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/or17?runprog=mgbbs&mode=thread&access=&subject=8&source=T&thread=201002271930024081 The same principal also applies to the door hinges. These are modifications that cannot be easily made after the wood has been installed and mounted. In both cases, a metal screw passes entirely thought the wood to take hold on a threaded metal plate on the back side. An alternative, the above thread discusses “T-Nuts” and these seem to fit the bill perfectly. The big advantage to this system, is that, as the body sags over the years, the wood screws lessen their grip, and tightening them only enlarges the wood screw hole. A metal screw can be periodically adjusted, maintaining door integrity. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué |

What are you using in "rare cases" when you do not need to sand but rather fill gaps? Do you use some scrap wood mixed with liquid nails or some other wood filler? Boris |

Boris, David, Gordon, thanks for the tips! My TF help files are getting larger. I know MGBs pretty well, but the T series is another ball game for me. Thanks again. PJ |

Does anyone know where you can find the wood for the instrument dash for 54 TF. I assume it is wood. It looks like wood. Thanks Bud White |

MG TF dashboards are all metal. No wood at all. They bolt in at a bracket top center and brackets at the extreme outer ends. SANDY |
