MG TD TF 1500 - 51 TD Mark II? Need Input

Gentlemen: I just purchased a 51 TD from a guy who had the car 22 years. I thought an extra set of friction shocks on the front seemed odd - obviously after doing some research on Chris' TD web site I started to add up the points. This car has all four Andrex in place, duel fuel pumps and individual feeds in the tank, all original, the motor numbers don't match the car ident number and the carbs are 1.5", so I'm thinking the original motor went south sometime in the past and was replaced by some fine shop with a standard TD mill! Some of these shop guys are dogs, aren't they? The car still has California plates on it and I would really like to trace the origin and past history - anybody care to help?
Thanks guys and Safety Fast from Indy - home of the F1 "Ferrari Parade"!

Post all the numbers... including the one on the engine... sounds like a MKII, and they did replace engines with factory ones... besides, it was the carbs and the head that made the mkII engine.
(I'm assuming you mean the engine number on the engine block doesn' t match the number on the brass/silver car/eng number plate)

Most Mk II's also have a dimple on the bonnet's right side to clear the original air cleaner.

Norm - The maker's plate on the left front of the tool box will have a car number of TD/c.... whereas the standard TD's car number is TD/... Cheers - Dave

Well guys, the dimple is on the right side of the bonnet and the car # is TD/c 5782, Engine #XPAG TD LHX 5782, Body 5226 67514 and blue/gold California tag # 253 EXO.

Help me get a history if you would.

Well, the TD/C (if it is on the brass plaque) means it came from the factory as a Mark II ... the "competion" TD... Well done.
I'm surprised that the Car Number and Engine number are the same??? The only one in 3000 that match?

Remove the valve cover and see if there are packing pieces (shims) under the rocker stands. If so, then at least the valve gear is the early MK.II prior to engine 17028. Measure the head thickness. It should be around 2.928 for a Mk.II head.
