MG TD TF 1500 - A generator/ alternator.
|A couple of weeks ago when the MMM cars were here someone mentioned that there is a guy in Ohio that rebuilds stock TD generators housings with an alternator inside. In other words the finished product looks just like a stock dynamo but works like an alternator. Now I can’t remember for the life of me who he is. Has anyone heard of him and maybe could provide his name and number?? Thanks, JL|

The one you need is the one they sell for a Mk 1 Sprite - it has the tacho drive. If you are not bothered about the alternator looking like a dynamo then Motobuild do a conversion of a routine auto alternator to take the tacho.
Race Mettle Ltd.
Does a nice conversion of a 20 watt Lucas dynamo into a 40 watt alternator. The conversion is nearly impossible to spot though not cheap, about 350 pounds.
Each unit is hand made with only the original end plates reused. I understand the main body is turned from a solid aluminum billet! I The finished unit weighs half what the old iron job does. Contact them at racemettleltd.co.uk
I don't know about the first place, but I contacted Race Mettle and the unit they turn out is beautiful - for an astranomical price! Cheers - Dave
There is yet another that puts an alternator into a TC dynamo - but not a TD/YF. It is:-
Classic & Vintage Dynamos
Unit 7 Shirebrook Busines Centre
Notrtingham NG20 8SP
I met this gut at the Stonleigh MG Parts Show, and perhaps by now, he's figured out how to put an alternator into the TD/TF dynamo casing.

The SC Parts Group Sprite alternator conversion interests me.
But if my memory serves me correctly, the pulley sheave is of a different pitch to the TD/TF one.
Or do they sell it w/o a pulley?
As I recall, the Sprite tacho gearbox is a different ratio than the TD/TF, but just as long as the take-off thread is the same.

I talked to the Classic and Vintage Dynamos guy at the UK National Exhibition Centre Classic Car Show last Saturday and indeed he now has alternators inside dynamo casings. I took pictures (admittedly not very good, inside, no flash) of his stock - and of him! And Tim Hodgkiss as well.
You can see them at
I asked him about a website and he has no plans. Not even an email address.
Just checked on Racemettle Ltd. and their Dynalite dynamo conversion. cool...
Now, the web site says it will boost power by 80%. If that is correct, what is the advantage and/or disadvantage of doing this?
Would it not help with adding new foglights/driving lights, etc?
