MG TD TF 1500 - Alternator - which one?

Going to switch to - ground in a few weeks (when its warmer). I'm intimidated by the process, but that won't stop me.

But I plan to buy one of those fancy look-alike alternators. Peter Edney has what appears to be a good one 50 amps - https://www.mg-parts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=3_73&product_id=211 for £205.

I'm sure there others but of course, they must have the rev-counter take-off on the rear.

Any thoughts on this?

I fitted a C39 Dynalite purchased though NTG. Hardest problem was getting at the nuts to change out the regulator to dummy box due to under tray. Only one problem over time was when the ignition warning light came loose, this stops the unit charging. Took a while to find but no problems since. Dynalite don't appear to make the C39 anymore only the C40 which appears in the photographs to have a stepped body so is not an exact match. Looking at your link appears to show two different bodies in the two photographs, one plain one stepped, wonder which one is correct when he refers to C45 in text.

Hi Gordon,

It is a few years since I sold my TF but I do remember issues with fitting an alternator. I initially purchased an expensive one c 500 pounds from I think Moss. It kept failing but Moss were excellent and sent me two replacements. When the second of these stoped charging I took it to local auto electrician who examined it with an endoscope. He recognised the internals as being from an alternator from a ride on lawn mower now housed in a custom casing. Originally the casing was full of cooling slots and there was a fan to promote air flow. The new,"T Series" housing was solid, cooling was compromised and the diodes were burning out. Moss refunded the cost and postage and I then bought a much cheaper one from the Octagon Club which had been designed from scratch. This worked perfectly. I don't know what is currently available but I would buy one that had been built from scratch rather than a conversion.

Gord, that sounds like the Dynamator. I've had great 'luck' with my $200 device (http://www.ttalk.info/Dynamator-for-Lazarus.html). Some folks have/had problems with theirs and claim that you must buy the $500+ dollar ones.
I'll swear that they are the same folks who had trouble with positive ground pertronix units. The purists have trouble with the control cable being on top of the unit. Cheers, Bud (88th birthday today)
