MG TD TF 1500 - aluminum radiator
I'd like to know if anybody fitted an aluminum radiator to a TD, and if so where could I get one. I do not have any overheating, no vapor lock - I do not have a carburettor shield in which I do not believe - but if I drive uphill for some 20 minutes at a sustained speed of four to five thousand rpm's, I do get temperatures such as 100C at the radiator, 90C at the head and about 80C in the oil sump. As soon as I drive back to "normality", such as two to three thousand rpm's, everything gets back to its steady state, which is 70C everywhere. Car runs fine no matter how hot, but I dislike it. I believe this is caused by the slow-burning of modern "green" fuels which cause a lean mixture at high rpm's, but I'd like to avoid that by improving cooling. I manage somewhat by adjusting the spark advance from the dashboard with a setup I have designed and built, but I am aware that this is not the only correct solution. Maybe kerosene is more correct. Denis, I have seen several T-Series with aluminium radiators. They of course, were purpose built to allow for a) greater capacity, b) fitting of a temperature sensor in the bottom tank of the rad, c) mounting brackets for an oil cooler in front of the rad, and d) mounting brackets for an electric fan behind the rad. Your best bet would be to contact the MG Vintage Racers; specifically Stan Edward - tech@mgvr.org Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Dennis, your problem can be easily solved with a few pieces of gaffer tape. Just stick one over each gauge readout! Regards, Richard. |

Denis, Try Peter King in the UK... http://www.mgsparesandrestorations.com/searchresults.cfm?RequestTimeout=1000 |

> Dennis, your problem can be easily solved with a few pieces of gaffer tape. Just stick one over each gauge readout! Regards, Richard. I think you are right: I like gauges too much! And yet, I am the one who told many people not to worry about oil pressure, since it's the product of pressure and flow that counts and does the work and not the pressure per se. But my suspicion is that the problem is caused by modern fuel, which does not burn as fast as the one in the past, creating a lean mixture at high revv's which causes heating. One solution is to install an overdrive, I have, modified for TD to reduce the revv's. Another is to try some different mixture, e,g, add kerosene, as Paul Ireland in the UK has done. I will try that before taking things apart. Thanks to all of you, Denis |

Just checked that link I sent yesterday and see that nothing is showing...duh. If you type radiator in the *search* box in the upper right hand corner the resultant search will show you the aluminum radiator you were asking about. |

Gene, I must have missed it,,,, nothing for a TD??? SPW |

Steve, The TC and TD radistor is exactly the same (check Moss listing P/N 453-980 or Abingdon Spares P/N 19-100). About halfway down the page you'll see it listed as TB/TC on the Andy King site. Gene |

Thank you Gene, I found it. It's expensive, but less than what I thought. Denis |
