MG TD TF 1500 - Auster Name Plate question
The Fall/Winter 2010 Moss Cataloge shows a nice mg td on the cover. In the picture it shows the Auster Name Plate on the outside of the windscreen frame. I thought the the name plate went on the inside of the windscreen. Which way is correct? Louis |

It belongs on the inside. They also gave credit for some ones TC on the Cover. Not sure if they got the name wrong or just the model. |

Louis, LaVerne is right (belongs on the inside)... Seems to be a common mistake to put it on the outside. Mine as well as many I have seen are that way. |

Just looking at that TD and wondering what is on the panel between the right door and the hood? Battery cutoff? Dan |

Dan: That is a good question, I was wondering myself, maybe we should contact Moss and ask them. I quess we all have too much time on our hands to look for all the mistakes that are made. Have a great day; Louis |

Inside/outside - this is interesting. Years ago, even before I restored our TD, the common wisdom said it was on the outside. Our TD was a fairly original one when we purchased it and the plate was on the outside and because that is where the holes were, that is where the plate resides today - it didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time, but who was I to argue with two existing holes? Cheers - Dave |

...makes me wonder if the inside and outside channel frame can be reversed.....? Am sure wherever the holes were was were it got screwed ... (so to speak)? |

I think folks just reversed the lower part of the frame when reassembling. As far as I know they were never on the outside originally - but I wasn't there when they assembled them originally - only from original cars that have supposedly never been disassembled. Good question for those with "originality" photos to research. |

The lower frame is reversible. You can even do it on the car, if you are careful of the gasket. My car had the Auster plate on the outside until I restored it, and now it is on the inside. Where it belongs. See photo on page 81 of the T-Series MGs by Graham Robson warmly, dave |

While we are on the subject, how do you remove the plate without damaging the frame? I want to send my windshield frame out for plating and want to remove the plate and rivets. Thanks, John |

I got my TD in 1964 and as far as I know it was original and it is on the inside. Bill |

Remove the glass from the frame, or the frame from the glass... and then remove the rivets. You can drill them out. But (ACKKK!) I left mine in and chrome plated it in place 'cause I knew it would look ratty with the newly chromed frame. A little swipe with some reddish brown coloring puts the AUSTER back in. warmly, dave |
