MG TD TF 1500 - Best Place to Sell a TD

I am attempting to sell a 1951 mg td on behalf of a friend who is settling an estate. I have advertised it for 3 months in the MG Enthusiast's Classifieds associated with this site, and in the British Marque Newsletter. Very little interest for a car in good condition that is fairly priced. What other no cost advertising venues do you all recommend? I have also sent a message to the MG T Registry in Massachusetts. I am a MGB person, with little connection to the T crowd.

Use eBay...describe it fairly with a lot of photos, if possible (and it should be with a modern camera) take several videos of it starting, running, doors opening and closing, etc.), post them on youtube.com and then link to them in the eBay ad description. Make sure your phone number and a time to contact you (correct time zone) are provided for people to ask questions. I've done all the above and it worked smoothly.

What about advertising in the TSO?

Gord, What is the TSO?
Joe Dufresne

The TSO is The Sacred Octagon, a bimonthly magazine published by the New England MG T Register.

The only problem with that is it's bi-monthly and most of the readership already owns at least one T-series.

Joe,

Oh man, where was this car when I was shopping for one two years ago! I just looked at your BBS ad and it describes a car I certainly would have followed up on before I found mine. A couple of questions I'd have would concern the condition of the hood (top), the condition of the WOOD(!), and the oil pressure.

You might take it upon yourself to install a new water pump and hoses to get it running - maybe even driving. That way, you can either sell it as a running car, or if it turns out that this allows you to discover more about what the car may need, the additional information would be of great value to prospective buyers. Seems to me you'd still be in a price range below $10K, and there aren't too many decent TDs out there (especially with a GOOD five-speed conversion) in this price range.

There is a HUGE current thread on five-speed conversions - that seems to be a topic of considerable interest. Do you know what kind of a conversion it is? More detail here could be a strong selling point.

Bolt-on wire wheels: OK but can you include the original wheels? The only turn-off, from my perspective, is the white interior. Speaking only for myself, white interior equates (probably unfairly) with a slightly unsavory past. It's not just a color, it implies something about the way the car may have been treated and/or used. Unfortunately, this is terribly unfair, but when I hear that the car has a white interior, I get to wondering what else has been done to it. I realize the poor P O is not around to defend himself and I don't mean to demean his character. But I think it is a reality of the market place. You might want to paint the upholstery and interior panels in something at least approximating an original color.

I would regularly renew the ad on MG Enthusiasts Classifieds to keep it toward the top of the queu, and include a website where pictures can be viewed - such as MG Experience, Flickr, etc.

Speaking of MG Experience, that would also be a good place to advertise free - and with pictures.

TSO = "The Sacred Octagon" - the journal of the New England MG T register. Google NEMGTR and you'll find the contact. That would be an excellent place to advertise. No doubt you belong to NAMGBR; put an ad in "MGB Driver". Also, you can advertise free with one picture (maybe more?) on the NAMGBR website.

Don't forget Craig's List. You can post photos there too.

Personally, I've bought and sold many cars on the MG Enthusiasts Classifieds, but perhaps they're becoming passe?

Finally, I too am an MGB guy, for the most part. For that price, why don't you buy the car yourself? I still love my stalwart B/GT and always will, but man ya gotta love the TD. Buy it - you'll never look back.

And don't overlook the economy we're in. You can buy it for a bargain-basement price now. Who knows what you can get for it when good times return.

FWIW,
