MG TD TF 1500 - Boat in a Bottle?
Some of you may recall that I've spent the past year or so building a new tub for 'the53' in my basement. There have been quite a few snickering remarks relating to the guy who builds a boat inside and has to tear his house apart to get it out. Well, today was the today. The question is -- will this:![]() |

I have confidence in you that it will Bud! (Good thing I didn't measure it for you) |
David Sheward |
YUP!!!! Anybody need a jig? Now comes the yo-yo work. Most of the tools and parts are still down in the basement. Up and down, up and down, etc., etc., etc. Bud ![]() |
Bud Krueger |
Bud, that looks great! I can appreciate the amount of work you have done. How did you get that tub through the bulkhead? Im assuming you had help? When are you writing the book? -David |
D. Sander |
Hi Dave. The secret is that the bulkhead doorway is 36" wide and the TD tub, measured from the bottom of the main side rails to the crest of the cowl is 'only' 33". The tub, sans doors and firewall, weighs in at 140 pounds. Four of us were readily able to handle it. Main problem was footwork getting up the bulkhead stairs. Bud |
Bud Krueger |
"footwork"...count me out. |
David Sheward |
Gee, Dave, for you I'd go back to my old USMC drill instructor days and count cadence, "Right, right, right, right..." Bud |
Bud Krueger |
So, Bud- When is the first edition of "HOW TO PROPERALLY RESTORE THE mg td" An illustrated how to guide to properlly restore the MG TD automobile by Bud Krueger Going to press? I thinking would be a valuable resource. -David |
D. Sander |
Nice job Bud. It's such a motivational step when the body gets set on the frame. Mike |

Mirrors and Magic will do it for you every time :-) Looking good! Cheers - Dave |

Bud, is that slave chassis the one I laid out? How did it work when you mated it to the chassis. As you might remember, I ended up using mine as a table. warmly, dave |
Dave Braun |
Very nice Bud. That must feel like a huge accomplishment. Now on to the next obstacle, challenge, or opportunity depending on how you view the world. Best, Dave |
Dave Clark Arizona |
Thanks for the kudos, guys, but there's a long way to go yet. I'll leave books up to you pros, Dave S. I'll just add a few pages to Ttalk spelling out things I learned as I went along. Dave B., that is indeed the slave chassis that I got from you. Have to admit that I had to make some modifications to get it to be functional. I'll get that info to you. Now I can seriously figure out how to mate the firewall to the tub. The DPO left me a scuttle cross rail that looks like a piece of Swiss cheese. Bud |
Bud Krueger |
Dave, From what Bud says, it seems like it was kind of tight with four of them trying to get it up the stair well,,, maybe there was a time during the move up the stairs when having only 7 would have been better instead of 8 ??? SPW |
STEVE WINCZE |
Bud Congrats!...Now the fun begins... Are you painting yourself, or sending it out? We're running "neck and neck"... Shot the color on the tub this week... Here's the tub before paint. (on the roll-around). ![]() |
E.B. Wesson |
Neither. I intend to sell it unpainted. I've concluded that there is no way that I could recover the cost of having it painted, some $6-7K. Nor do I have the capital in invest in it. The only part that I'll have painted is the firewall, black. That'll make it easier for the buyer to have it painted. I'm just saving this car from almost having been parted out It'll be rust-free, all new wood (except for 1 piece), mechanically rebuilt, newly-wired machine. Bud |
Bud Krueger |
Dave B. - you've got mail. Bud |
Bud Krueger |
WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Jim Merz |
Thanks Bud. I had a training staff meeting tonight, but I'll look at it and get back to you. Thanks for the feedback! |
Dave Braun |
Bud Do you have a buyer lined up? If not can I be first to stand in line? I will be living in NJ soon! Mike |
Mike Sutton |
No problem, Mike. I'm anxious to get it off of my hands. There's a good bit to go yet. How about sending me your email address off-line and we can talk more about it? Bud |
Bud Krueger |
Hi Bud You have mail! Mike |
Mike Sutton |
Mike, When did you say you are going to be coming to NJ??? Will you be here in time to join us at our British By The Sea Gathering at Harkness Memorial State Park, Waterford Ct on June 3rd???? SPW |
STEVE WINCZE |
Looks like a number of us are at about the same stage - this is what I accomplished on Tuesday. Now, just the front wings and the doors to go. Can't wait to get wet sanding!! Don ![]() |

Steve I fly in to Liberty 25th June, close on the house 26th, then lie by my pool in glorious New Jersey sunshine until I return to the warm rain of Lancashire on the 25th July. So unfortunately I will not be there on the 3rd. Now next year?!! Thanks for asking. Mike |
