MG TD TF 1500 - Brooklands steering wheel diameters

I'm contemplating replacing the TF's steering wheel with a Brooklands. I measured my existing (standard 3 spoke) wheel, and it measured 16 1/2 inches...outside rim to outside rim. Brooklands (Kimble-Rutter) lists 3 available sizes. 17, 15 1/2, and a 14 inch wheel. Has anyone bought/installed a 14 inch wheel? Being smaller it may impact turning effort, but would give you a lot more leg/torso room. Not sure how it would look installed (good size....too small) assuming they measure their wheels the same way.

Jim, My 15" Brooklands, love it! Got it from Abingdon Spares and was told it was made on original Brooklands tooling in the UK. Great people to deal with! PJ
I understand other so-called "Brooklands" wheels are copies from cheap labor countries.?? PJ

PJ:

I ordered one through Abingdon. I suspect they may get their Brooklands wheels from Kimble-Rutter (previously John Kimble/Kimble Engineering) in the UK. A little more expensive buying from Abingdon, but not by much. One question...when you installed the Brooklands, were you able to leave the chrome spring cover and cap on the steering column? I can't tell if the Brooklands hub extends further down the steering column more than the standard 3 spoke wheel hub/boss.

BTW....nice shot/angle of your cars interior. Color combination with the chrome bits looks great, and gives it a subtle high-end appearance.

Jim, My spring is still installed but as I have the wheel fully forward the spring is fully compressed and not much left to show, but it's still there. I really like the feel of the wheel, slightly thicker than the original but not too much, very comfortable. And now with the 5-speed quite a bit quieter to drive also. PJ

In your picture I noticed a secondary door latch towards the door bottom. Where did you get those? Are they chromed?

We had an old Brooklands wheel with our TF, same size as the original 3 spoke wheel that needs repair. Both are uncomfortably too large when seated on our freshly upholstered seat (no sagging foam). Our solution was to obtain a 14inch wheel and make up a new boss to fit the TF. We are yet to make a new centre to suit this, but can report that the car is much more comfortable to drive. The Brooklands wheel can always be swapped in when necessary.

Jim, the bottom safety latch is a marine item made of chrome-plated brass. Just look up Marine latches on the web, there are quite a few different latches available. After installing them, I wish I installed a simpler design. PJ
