MG TD TF 1500 - Bumper bar question
The PO of my 51 TD had a 2 5/8" high rear bumper bar on the car rather than a proper 3" high bumper (which I've now installed). Does anyone know what vehicle a 2 5/8" bumper bar comes from? The chrome is in good shape and I may want to list it on eBay, but I want to be certain that I describe it correctly. |

Is the bar in question the same shape otherwise? Are the top and bottom lips the same width or is one shorter than the other? Was your new replacement a repro? George |

my guess is it is for a volkswagen based kit car mg td. regards, tp |

George, the bar is the same shape, with holes for the back bar and brackets located where they should be. The lips are different - one is curled in about an inch and the other about a 1/2 inch. |

Phil, you likely have an original facebar. That is how the lips are suppose to be- with the much wider at the top. My positively original rear bar is 2-3/4" in height (lip to lip), and was really thickened a lot when rechromed, which would make it about the same size as yours. I recall that all replacement bars since the 70s have had equal length lips top and bottom. The size and shape of the various repro overriders is not just right also- they are too wide and rounded overall compared to the originals. George |

George, You're right about the repro bumpers and the misfit with the overiders. This is why we now have to use plastic chanelling to obtain a reasonable fit and appearance - this was not used (or needed!)on original cars. Cheers, John |

Gentlemen, thank you for the insight. I took the original off because I wanted to match (what I have now learned to be a repro that I have) on the front. I also wanted to have the face bar fit well with the 'repro' over riders. I guess I now have an original face bar that I can sell on eBay or if anyone on the BBS wants to purchase a very good original rear face bar, let me know. pwatrill@yahoo.ca |
