MG TD TF 1500 - captive nuts rear fenders
The DPO of my 53TD decided to remove the captive nuts to which the rear fenders are attached to the arch and proceeded to install SAE nuts and bolts. Does anyone know the proper size of nuts? I think they might be 5/16 but would like to confirm. Also, does anyone know where these can be purchased? |

Mark, There is a whole chapter in my website devoted to captive nuts. mg td15470 Restoration » Tub and Wings » Creating Captive Nuts You can't buy them, but you can make them. Basically, the fenders are 5/16 BSF. There are a few 1/4 BSF. You can make the nuts by running a tap through a 1/2 x 1/2 x 3/16 cold rolled steel bar stock. For the cages, you just need to form the proper size cross and bend into shape. warmly, dave |

Mark, Anglo Parts sell both the square nuts and the case, they are sold in packs of 10, not cheap, but a lot less trouble than making them. angloparts.com part no 161.135 Case 161.138 5/16 BSF Nut John |

Abingdon Spares at least used to have the proper square nuts, as well as the entire captive nut plate ready to spot weld on. |

Thanks George, Abingdon still sells the parts. I've got some on order. Mark |

Hi Mark I can second George on the captive nuts and cages that Abingdon sells. We have used these on 4 or 5 cars in the past. Good luck. Jeff |
