MG TD TF 1500 - Carroll Shelby

I know he was not into british cars, But RIP Carroll Shelby.
Tom Maine (TD8105)

Oh yes, he was into British cars. It was an AC roadster that he started it with. RIP, Carroll. Bud

When he started racing he drove an mg td/C. I always wished he went with GM power instead of Ford.
A true legend. He will be missed.

Forgot about the TD. Sold at auction a few years ago for a lot of money. He did the AC but his real legacy was american muscle car stuff and Ford. David, I to wish I could have seen a Shelby Vette. Here is mine.

Tom,
I wish I'd known about your Corvette when we met. We have a '59. Something else to talk about when we meet again.

He won Le Mans in a Aston Martin.
I think it was 1959.
Keep the belts tight & many more wins in heaven Mr. Shelby

I think I read once that he won that race with Nitro pills under his tounge? Heart problems far back as 59.
Meet him briefly when I was young. Signed the inside of bonnet on my dad's 289.

RIP Mr. Shelby

One of the executives where I work has a Ford GT. Several years ago he chased Shelby all over VIR trying to get a piece of it autographed. He eventually succeeded!

"Car Buffs,"

If memory serves me correctly, Carroll Shelby was a Texas farmer and gradually did more and more racing. Eventually, his heart, I think, forced him out of the "cockpit" and into the design room. He's one of the legends of American automotive lore, and started beating the Europeans, who had dominated road racing. I think Lee Iacocca persuaded him to put "that engine" into the Ford Mustang. Eighty-nine years of age!

I met him once in the early '60's at Vacaville raceway in California where they were running a couple of the development Cobras. Ken Miles was there as well. I later bought one of the 1967 GT350s new off the showroom floor in Seattle for $4200. Wish I still had the car.

He was a great innovator and will be sorely missed in performance car circles. RIP

Actually it was Carroll Shelby who convinced Lee Iacocca to sell him 2 or 3 engines as a trial. Lee was the guy who cut through the buracracy at Ford. Even got him $25,000 bucks. They both blew up in front of all the Ford top brass at the first demo. Didn't stop him. He refused to stop working even through all his illnesses. At 89 he had plans to break 200 mph driving one of his new creations. Just saw his very first AC Cobra at the New York Auto Show. Gave me the chills. He seemed unstoppable. His passing is sending shutters though out the whole automotive world.

Carroll Shelby's first race car was a 1949 MG TC. It was a green, cycle fendered special but pretty much MG. It sold at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas in August 2008 for $313,500. Not sure if that was actual selling price or if there was a buyers fee involved. A portion of the selling price was donated to charity. Mark.

Yes, his foundation helps families of kids needing transplants.

A.R. Hey, I used to go to Vacaville. My uncle build race engines and spent a lot of time at Vacaville checking out his engines. I do remember Mr. Shelby being there.

I have a "note" taped to my desk:
C. Shelby 1949 TC $285,000 2nd highest of 09 BJ Vegas auction.
(Could be wrong on year)

Let’s not forget Shelby's development of the Sunbeam TIGER. During one interview I am told that he was asked what automotive development he was most proud of having been involved with. His reply was, “The Sunbeam TIGER”. The interviewer was shocked since he had barely heard of a TIGER and asked “Why?”
“Because it got the most power into the hands of the youngest drivers at the least cost and that’s what it’s all about.”
Not sure if it’s true or not but sure sounds like Shelby and his own TIGER is a car that he said he would never sell!

Bruce, I'll bet we crossed paths there at Vacaville. I was there quite oftain with my first TD and there weren't very many other people around.
