MG TD TF 1500 - Chassis number
Hi Having tried to identify what distributor I should be running (see my post under Distributor identification) someone asked the question had I got the right engine number. Well to cut a long story short I can only go by the plate on the engine, which may of course be a retro fit and the number could be right. However I thought I would check the chassis number on the dumbiron. The identification plate shows it as TD22307, the number on the dumbiron is TD22807. This begs the following questions 1. Which number is correct 2. Do I inform the Licensing Authorities 3. What difference does this make to the official records, is there another car out there with the chassis number TD22307 I have a copy of the Heritage Certificate for 22307 so I now need to get one for the correct number. Your thoughts TIA Mick 52TD or is it 53 |

Mick, what's the engine number shown of the ID plate? Car No. 22307 had Engine #23184. Car 22807 had 23239. Can you read the engine # stamping on the block? BTW, both cars came off of the line on Dec 4, 1952. Bud |

My dumbiron shows 8686 but one of the 8's isn't stamped very well and could easily be construed as a 3. Could that be what you are seeing? I think their "8" stamp was kind of worn maybe? Just a thought. |

Bud Other than on the brass plate on the block was the engine number stamped elsewhere? Ed The number is definitely an 8. Glad that it is still a 52 model Mick |

Mick, Look just above the brass plate. The engine number will be stamped there, although on some cars, it is very lightly stamped. I wonder how both cars, 500 serials apart, came off the line on the same day? Could it be a typo from the factory records, i.e. they had stamped a car incorrectly and recorded the info, and then stamped it correctly and re-recored it? Incidently, the factory used a 3 with a flat upper line rather than a double curve for the 3 stamp on the ID plate on the firewall(at least on my car). warmly, dave |

Hi Mick, TD22307 was a RH Export model (NZ/AUS)? TD22807 was a LH Export model (N. America)and not know to the register. If yours has not been converted LH/RH I would stick with the plate number as it is probably correct. It is very obvious if conversion has been done (pedal box/pedal spindle etc). Ray TF2884 |

Hi guys Thanks for your prompt response. The chassis number 22807 corresponds with the known history, ie exported to North America as left hand drive and converted to right hand drive in 1993 and registered in the UK as TD22307 with engine number 29970. Have just found the number stamped on the block and this is 19854 which suggests that there has been an engine/block change at some time during its history. The question now is do I tell the Licensing Dept as the official records show TD22307/29970 Regards Mick still 52TD |

Hi Mick, my car is registered on the basis of the numbers on the numbers on the VIN plate and engine plates, but the numbers on the engine block and chassis do not match these plates. I am leaving well alone, I can imagine a whole can of worming being opened if you try and change the registratin details. Matt. |

Hi Mick, I agree with Matt, the only people interested in the vin are the MOT testers and not many around now know that the number is on the chassis. Leave well alone and plead ignorance, if like the rest of us and you intend to keep it until you croak it doesn't matter!A bit of filler and paint will hide it. Ray TF2884 |

Mick, I agree with Matt and Ray. It seems pretty universal to leave everything as it has been in the past. Giving more information than requested, because you are trying to do the right thing, could be inviting a long delay on your end and possibly a lot of headaches. JMHO. PJ |

....will it create a problem when the cars are sold...? |

Hi Mick I purchased “Patsy Two”, my TF number 2583, without seeing her for real; just photos and a friend’s recommendation! I soon found that the engine number on the block (25048) did not agree with the firewall plate and the registration documents. At the time I hadn’t found this forum so, fat dumb and happy, I completed the “changes to current vehicle” on the registration certificate and sent it off to the authorities. I also informed the T register. Two weeks later the registration certificate came back with the new engine number duly recorded and Barry Jones e-mailed me that the engine came from a 1952 mg td and that it would not detract from the value of my car. I haven’t looked for the chassis number on the dumbiron. If that doesn’t agree with the documentation then I really am in trouble! Regards Mike |
