MG TD TF 1500 - Check matching numbers
Interestingly enough, in a discussion with my mother-in-law yesterday (the previous owners wife), she stated that her brother might have some of the history on my 1952 mg td that I inherited from her decided husband. Her brother mentioned to her that the engine in it is not the original engine. The car number is 12947 and the engine number is XPAG/TD2/LHX/13447. Before I give him a call, are there any records that would indicate what the number of the original engine would have been? In the very slow process of dismantling the car, I have been able to ascertain that it was wrecked at one time. It appears to have been hit or run into something on the front left side. If the engine had to be replaced, the accident would have been a serious one I would think. Thank you for any information. Patrick |

Original engine according to the records is XPAG/TD2/LXH1344. see this site http://www.tregister.org/search_prod.php |

Just because the engine doe not match the engine number on the ID plate doesn't mean the car was wrecked. In 1958, I was driving my (then owned)supercharged TC to Poughkeepsie,NY to see a girl, when I blew the engine up. I had the MG dealer in Poughkeepsie put a TD engine in it. I owned the car until '62 and it had never been wrecked. Remember at that time it was just a ten-year old second hand car!

Sound like her brother wants to buy the car! LOL I'm betting finding the info above made your day. Cheers |

I find the number Patrick listed 13447 and the engine number 1344 from the records a bit odd. Patrick. Did you copy the 7 incorrectly? If so, this is the original engine One other question, with the start of the use of TD2, did they restart the engine numbers? Why a 4 digit with a 5 digit car? |

Remember that the production records truncate the last digit of the longest numbers such as XPAG/TD2/LXH13447. The correct number does indeed have a 7 at the end, according to my factory ledger sheets. Tom Lange MGT Repair Basr Harbor, Maine. |

patrick, if you are doing this research for the fun of the research..high marks. if you are doing this in an effort to determine value...from my experience "matching numbers" currently has no effect on MG TD prices. regards, tom |

Bruce, Tom is right on-same thing with my engine number- the last digit was dropped on the search. I think this was addressed somewhere- something with a software conversion issue during editing or construction of the search function. George |

Thank you gentlemen, I am definately not trying to establish engine originality for financial purposes. I came to the conclusion a long time ago that this is not a money making proposition. It is a true (expensive) labor of love. I was just curious since I thought I had established that the engine number matched the car when it was first picked up 5 1/2 years ago. I am pretty sure the TD was in an accident at one point. There is too many little peices of evidence, e.g., broken horn mouth on one side, bent base of radiator support on same side, and I think a crinkle in the frame on the same side also. Not to worry, this is not a deterrent to the restoration, just an interesting observation. As always, this BB is a great source of information and with my lack of knowledge in cars and car restoration, it is invaluable. I wouldn't be able to even consider this project with out each of your experience and generous guidance. More Later, Patrick |
