MG TD TF 1500 - Cockpit/Hood covers

I saw this cockpit cover at a GOF a couple of years ago. I'm either going to make a few, or if they are commercially available for less than my time and labor, purchase one.

Anyone have one and do you remember where you found it? What features would you be sure to include in the finished project?

warmly,
dave

These are currently being made and sold through ebay. I purchased one and it is great. I believe the cost is $85. It is water resistant and fits beautifully and then fits into a small pouch for storage, making a good lumbar support while driving.

Check out ebay motors under mg td.

Several of us have them in our register in Atlanta
(SEMGTR). A vendor on ebay is making then and selling for $85. They are very nice since we do a lot of traveling. Mine is made of rain proof material and
lends a certain amount of privacy. Has a small pouch to store in the vehicle

A few friends in the OMGTR have had them made for an open cockpit....made out of ripstop nylon...!!!

The source (or another source) is Maryellen Pelletier here in NH. Email is Mpellet923@comcast.net.

No financial interest etc.

We have one on our car,,, after a few years, I had to re treat it with a water repellant from a camping supply place,,, it works well!! Commonly called a "Bikini top" (unlike the one Jackie uses and looses)

Wow... Thanks! For some reason my ebay searches have never turned one up... but then I never just put 'MG TD' in the ebay motors search box before (I always tried to narrow it for parts only)

Here is a listing:

I've also contacted Maryellen. You guys are the best.

I'm going to talk it over and see what I want to do!

dave, thanks for your original post. i had not seen these before. i just ordered one. regards, tom

Dave,
Nor had I and also just ordered one as well! My old car cover takes way too much space and is too hard for an old man like me to put on. Hope he isn't overwhelmed with these orders!

it took a while, but now I remember that we purchased our bikini top from Jim Pesta,, from Ohio,,, probably the same person on the above e-bay link,

SPW -- Jim Pesta ran a business called "Auto Graphics" (in Cinncinate, I believe) and has been out of business for a few years. He made both of mine and they have always been a bit narrow across the windscreen otherwise very nice.

I don't know if Maryellen does the embroidery on the windscreen panel or not. I haven't seen one of her finished products (at least to know it was hers).

Anyway glad the other guys are getting them and giving Maryellen some business.

Cheers,

Dave, The cover that I had seen at a couple of the Eastern GOFs, was a little different. It did not require the erection of the top frame, which would be also mean that the top is up! The ones that I'd seen, covered the windscreen, went from the top of it, straight to the rear tub rail, and were bungied to the door handles. I seem to remember that they were blue rip-stop nylon, and I think that there was some kind of a pole or stick that kept them from puddling with rain water. They were not much more than a light tonneau, but kept the windscreen dry as well as the interior. At night, I noticed them on several of the cars. I routinely leave my car outside with the tonneau on, while on trips, but the reg and ispection stickers always get messed up from the dew. I'd like to get my hands on one of those!
Steven Tobias

Dave, Jim Pesta had them at GOF in Indiana last year.

Guys - - Another benefit so far unmentioned is that the wiper motor is covered. I remember seeing a tonneau covered TD after an overnight shower with the wiper motor running because it had been short-circuited by rain water. Lou VanK.

Rain short circuited a wiper motor?? Good old Lucas!

Cheers,

Dave's first photo makes it look like the top is down, but there is a frame of some kind? The ebay photo looks like it is put on over the top?
The one's that I have seen made up here, just go from the top of the windshield, straight back and down to the top of the spare tire (and the sides of course)...? Very taunt and tight and light.... Anyone seen that type?
gblawson(gordon)

I received a response from Maryellen. Her product has a self pocket for storage (6x6x1) and it sounds like she ususally makes them with some embroidery on the front. Her's are ripstop nylon and sound perfect for what I want... to keep the rain out of the gaps when parked.

It sounds like she makes a few and then sells them. I don't know if she will special order a color or if I can have our club logo put on locally. I'm going to check with her.

Her pricing is quite reasonable!

I like the idea of a sloping cover from the windscreen to the rear of the car, coming down to cover the door cutouts. I have to think about where that might attach, as the point of such a cover would be to keep the tonneau in place, or even just over the rear compartment.

Here's a photo of Maryellen's cover, does a fine job and looks nice, too.

GORDON-YES. See my post above.
Steven Tobias

Missed your post steven... yes, that is what I would consider making/buying... With the top up, (and the car not moving) mine stays fairly dry...its when the top is down and you get caught out in a lot.
The ones that I have seen 'bungie' to door handles and tire carrier I think!

Gordon, There were so many of these covers at the Eastern GOF's...I was hoping that someone would jump in and say where they got them. They looked professionally made.
Steven Tobias

I bought one many many years ago from a lady in the NEMGT Register by the name of Birdie Nichols. I still have it but do not use it that much anymore. It was a sort of silver gray material and worked out well for travleling. We would travel with the top up (bad reaction to sun burn) up and the side curtains off and when stopping for lunch it was a simple matter to put that on and thus "hide" anything that was inside. Never did have anything stolen fortunately.
Mine also came in a small pouch for storage.

Well, since we got it started here, does she want to deal direct & save her the Ebay expenses?
Carl Floyd

My credit card has been charged for the top so it must be on it's way via Ebay already.

The top cover I purchased was from "Auto Graphics" and I had a reason to use it this past weekend when we visited the inlaws. We had the top up most of the weekend as the weather didn't know what it wanted to do so the top cover was great and it certainly does the job very well. The only additional thing I did was to go out and purchase a couple (4 actually) bungy cords as my non-original luggage rack blocked where the top would have fastened and I didn't like how tight it was getting to the bottom hinges so I bungied from the elastic to the rear spring.

Worked really well, even in a wind and does hide the contents from prying eyes.

I decided to purchase from Maryellen Pelletier. I ordered Black with a Green MG logo on the windscreen portion. Thanks again for all the assistance!

Brian,
I had the same problem with getting the bottom door hinge to fit so I contacted Auto Graphics. He checked it out and indeed, there is an error with the pattern. Seems they have a new seamstress. He will be sending me a new top when fixed. I took the liberty of sending him your email (from above post) so you may be getting an email from him as well.

Thanks Ed. I am really happy with the top and the "work around" was minor but will wait and see if I am contacted.

Ed, Brian

I have two Auto Graphics covers, one for a two bow top and one for a three bow top that I bought years ago when he was first producing them. The two bow fit correctly but the three bow cover was too short to fit on the lower door hinge. I added a tie wrap to the loop on the cover to slip over the door hinge. Not a new problem.

i just got my cover. i will have to see how it fits when i get home. thanks for the heads up on possible fit problems. regards, tom

My Maryellen Pelletier cover arrived on the second and I had a chance to use it at our club's Fourth of July gathering/pool party. Beautiful day, but a storm tracked in and for a brief time it poured. With the top up and no side curtains installed, the cockpit stayed dry as a bone! Here are some pictures:

Cut and paste the link if it doesn't work... and yes, my date got set wrong on my camera... I really have to get a better pair of reading glasses.

warmly,

Dave Braun

Dave, link doesn't work for me even if cut/paste. All those "%20"'s in there signify non-literal codes of some sort and are probably the culprit. Now I'm curious how your cover fits compared to mine. Still no word back from Auto Graphics re: their error.
Ed
efh Ed

FYI,,,, the cut an paste worked fine for me....

SPW
Steve Wincze

Okay, I can get to it by going directly to Dave's web site and clicking the Weather Equipment page but cut/paste gives "Page cannot be not found, error 404".
efh Ed

Yeah, someday I have to re-code the site to remove the spaces. Sorry Ed, for the inconvenience!
