MG TD TF 1500 - COTTER KEY LEAK....

Allo.

Some time ago, I read about the cotter key oil
leak/drip from the rear of the pan area..mg td.
I've checked the archives, but no joy...!

Is it possible to plug/stop this leak ....?
Or what...? How to stop it..?
I am aware that it's a good source for
preventing rust on the underbelly, but it's
messy...

Your thoughts, pls.

The cotter there to keep clear the drain for the oil that gets past the rear main seal area. To plug it up would be to guarantee your clutch will become soaked with oil. If it is bad, re-do the rear main seal (plenty in the archives about your options), put a pad under the engine, or make a tray to fit under the drain, emptying it every once in a while.

DrPx,

You've got a pretty early TD...what's your car number?

I wonder which TD is the earliest on this site...

It must be between TD0812 and TD0828.

Sorry - I meant that Croujeux's car must between TD0812 and TD0828, not that those were the lowest serial numbers known.

Advise is correct. The split pin rattles when the car is moving so that the drip hole stays open. It is a very good indicator that MG expected some oil to get out. Some is a variable that appears to be unique to each car.

My TD has a very slight coating of oil on the oil pan and the transmission. I only occasionally see a drip on my floor.

My engine is set up without the newer rear seal kit. I do have the new front seal in place.

In my case, I am very very meticulous on the set up of the seals, the flatness of the pan gasket surface (including the timing chain cover gasket surface) and the installation of the gasket. This is my second TD engine and in both of them, this attention to detail has reduced my oil leakage to a not noticeable issue.

Greetings...

Many thanks for the replies & info..

My MG TD-1950. Born. Feb-27-1950.
Car # 0823. Mtr/VIN XPAG/TD/LHD 950.

Owner since 1965. Paid $500.00 for it....!
I drive it to the Annual Ironstone Concours
in Murphys, Calif. ( 100 miles )
While I show it, I also drive it, but only
in sunny dry weather. The only water it sees
is during wash-buff & shine time. Original clock works, but it's not hooked up. Circa 50,000 original
miles. Over the many years, it's been a source
of Agony & Ecstasy...! However, It's a keeper
and is paid for....!

Happy MG trails.
