MG TD TF 1500 - Crown wheel & pinion

Dear All,

I'm looking after a cronw wheel & pinion for a mg td 1953. When I look on internet I mostly see they offer - propose same part but from mga.
Is it same piece ?
Any suggestion about where I can find it ?

Thx for your help,
CVD Christophe

If your looking for a 4.3 ring and pinion from an MGA to do a conversion you might find one from Hugh Pite. His email is jenntoo@shaw.ca. I believe he lives in B.C. so the shipping might be expensive.

They show up on eBay from time to time. Regards, tom

Harry,

I'm thinking of converting my TF ring and pinion to the MGA 4.33 as you have done. Are you happy with it and does the 1250 engine have enough power to go up slight hills without the need to downshift?

Bill, I did that conversion myself a few years ago. A GREAT mod. Normal shifting vs. Really not needing 1st except to pull stumps..and lower rpm at hwy speeds.

We did the 4.33 conversion to the TF and are very satisfied, even in these hills of Western Pennsylvania. It's nice tooling along with traffic without the engine sounding as if it wants to climb out of the car. Off highways, I certainly use third more.

As Tom says, you end up using the unsynchronized first gear for something more than parades. That being the case, you may want to brush-up on double clutching so that you don't have to come to a complete legal stop at stop signs in order to shift. While I can recommend it, I haven't gotten the hang of double clutching. When I have tried it, I fear doing too much damage to the car, and invariably give up. My dad looks over at me with the sadness of an elder witnessing the end of a chapter of human capability. "C'mon, you just have to listen and match the engine speed with the gear you're in and slide it right in. Heck when I got my TD back in '61, it didn't have brakes and only had a third gear and it wasn't synchronized. I remember driving it home across the mountains in the snow and..."

Safety? Fast?

Thank you Tom and Scott for your endorsement of changing to the 4.33 gearing. I am now convinced it is the way to go and the winter months is the time to do it.
