MG TD TF 1500 - Dave Braun

I have been looking through your album. It looks like you used paint from a spray can on some of your parts. If this is true do you think it will hold up as well as from a regular spray gun? And as far as your nuts and bolts, did you strip or blast them and then spray paint them with metallic paint? Also you make a comment about silicon brake fluid. Whats are the pros and cons? You have made a lot of progress on your car in a short period of time. Your photo album is great. I hope to do as well on my car.

thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

"It looks like you used paint from a spray can on some of your parts. If this is true do you think it will hold up as well as from a regular spray gun?"

Spay can paint is the same stuff as regular paint, except that as a rule, it has some additives which make it easier to handle but also affect its shelf life. The advantage of a spray gun is that you can control your additives, spray a larger pattern if you like, and control the paint better, if you are good. For small parts I think a spray can is fine, for larger parts or a lot of painting, I use my spray gun.

"And as far as your nuts and bolts, did you strip or blast them and then spray paint them with metallic paint?"

I tumbled them in wet media, and then dry media, boxed them all up and cad plated them. The silver cad won't take paint well, so I left those silver. The fastners which are to be painted I simply installed after tumbling to be painted when I'm finished assembling.

"Also you make a comment about silicon brake fluid. Whats are the pros and cons?"

I went back and forth, and made a personal decision. I'm not racing my car, and I was concerned about paint, so after cleaning my lines thoroughly, I went with silicon. It was a last minute decision. Pros, won't harm paint, longer life, almost no maintenance. Cons, high temperature fade, harder to seal up lines, some rubber will swell under its use and there is one piston seal in our master cylinders which seems particularly prone to swell and cover a small vent hole causing brake lock up. Your choice.

Thanks for the kind comments. I'm sure whatever you decide will be right for you.

warmly,
dave
