MG TD TF 1500 - desktop

Have been in contact with the Heritage Museum asking for samples of assembly line shots... They sent me a number of thumbnails to choose from... Have put a few together as a desktop image...TD's and TC's.
Right click and save to desktop if you want it!

I knew they sent out CKD versions in primer, I wonder if that Td in a box is something else?
gblawson - TD#27667

Great pictures!

Do they offer these in larger sizes?

The CKD version has a pretty good shine for primer. Looks about right for laquer shine.

Boy, wouldn't that be a fun box to open!!
Evan Ford - TD 27621

They have quite a selection...she sent me about 12 thumbnails...I had asked for anything that showed the assembly line or cars waiting for export.
They scan to suit the need...25 pounds was mentioned (a bit high at $50.00)
You would think they would batch out a bunch of prints and put together a book or something.
I know the MG club has over 5000 prints that have not been filed or copied yet!
gblawson - TD#27667

Wow! Too bad there's not a way to get the collection online somewhere. It would be great to browse through the pictures.

I'm hoping the new executive of the MG club will take it on... I know a ton/lot/some/little money is being earmarked for a new facility/office/club/chair, so maybe some of that could be put into cataloguing(sp) the collection.
I would be willing to spend two weeks starting/helping/watching them do it. Can't think of a better U.K. vacation.
You know, 10 guys with 10 laptops and 10 scanners and it would not take that long!
gblawson - TD#27667

I'd be into that as well! I would trade labor for a CD of the scans.

What was the reason to ship CKD ??? Seems like it would be easier to "roll on roll off" on it's own wheels ... Or was this a way to get a garage for the car at the same time ?? <:)

Think the CKD went to Ireland (?) and were assembled there...they went either 3 or 5 at a time...Remember seeing them packed in shipping crates(s) with the 3/5 chassis nestled together and the other parts in other crates.
gblawson - TD#27667

Okay,
I'm new in the TD world...having owned 5 MGB's, but no T series...so, just what IS a CKD?

Perspiring minds need to know.

Thanks!!!

Dave,
CKD = Cpmpletly Knocked Down

IMHO this is not a CKD car.
It looks completely finished to me, only the wheels are off to enable the despatch dept. to "nail" it more securely to the wooden crate in which it was shipped.
The later MGA's were shipped in a more or less similar manner: removal of the wheels and windscreen also enabled them to stow more crates in a ship's cargo hold.

CKD's were often sent to countries with high import taxes. Importing loose parts was often cheaper than import of the complete car. As a side effect the assembly of the CKD-units was good for the employment in the export country.
I thought that the Dutch Morris/MG importer Molenaar in Amersfoort, also assembled CKD TD's but I'm not quite sure on that.
Cheers,

I put the original thumbnails I recieved on a page as they included some photos other then TD/TC you might be interested in.
Hoping they might send me a few more (like hundreds) to add to the page.
Between the BMHT and the MGClub(theirs are not filed yet) there are about 850,000 images!!! Am sure a quarter are MG related!

The nice lady at the BMIHT just sent me 30 more images from their TD files...some I have seen in various books, some I am not familiar with... couple (publicity shots were a little larger then thumbnails).

There is one shot listed as: C-33108-MGTD Interior, however, it isn't a TD...fuel tank under a rear panel and of course 4 seater (I know a couple were mocked up, but don't think this is one of them)... Would like to put it in its own directory or in one where it belongs.... Anyone know the model?
gblawson - TD#27667

I think C-33108 is a YT Gordon.
Thanks for sharing the photos ! Most of them were unknown to me.

Nick is right, it IS a YT
Willem van der Veer

Thank you... will switch its directory the next time i upload.

Those are great photos. Thanks.

I just received another little batch of TD assembly line photos from the nice lady at the BMIHT ... added them to the TD directory on the web site:
http://gblandco.com/gb/bmiht/album/index.html
They are the last 7 or 8....

This regarding the pricing....

To clarify the pricing structure for you, where negatives have already been digitised we can supply thumbnail images via email at no charge. If, as the result of a particular request, we need to source and scan original negatives or photographs there is a fee of £10.00 per hour applied to cover administration costs. We provide a fixed quotation for this search fee prior to commencing the order. Photographic material can then be ordered as required and is charged separately. For a special order like your high resolution digital image, we provide a one-off quotation to cover the cost of scanning, cleaning and mailing of the image.

No TF pictures ????
LaVerne

-Gulp-...I didn't ask for TF pictures....!!!
gblawson - TD#27667

I'm really, really interested in getting a hold of these kind of images for my MG historical images gallery, but I wonder what kind of money she's talking about. The kicker is, the ones that are scanned are free. So you're paying to get negatives scanned, which theorecically will be free to the next person to ask for them.

It sounds that way... they also have a catalogue with choices across the models...she is sending me that one.
For your page, would the size of the thumbnails I posted be ok...? I assume you have grabbed them all?
It also sounds like they are labelled funny, I sent a couple small ones I already had and she thought she had them, but couldn't find them...she mentioned that some are not fully labeled..."MG/assembly/Abingdon" that sort of thing.
Judging by the photos I have seen in various published MG books, there is a pretty 'stock' selection...and they use them over and over...I assume I will see them in the Catalogue she is sending me! (Publishers saving money by not paying to scan fresh new ones....) Would kill to just go look!
gblawson - TD#27667

You don't see many of the 'upper' body assembly line: C-040650-MG-TD&TaxiProductionLinesAbingdon1951

http://gblandco.com/gb/bmiht/album/index.html
gblawson - TD#27667

I think this photo wasn't taken at Abingdon but at the Morris Bodies Branch were the TD body was built.
The TD's in this photo don't have their upholstery fitted (nor their windscreens). Remember they were fully trimmed when they arrived at Abingdon's "upper deck".
And what are those four door saloons ? Surely not MG Y-types...
All very interesting photos though !!! Thanks again.
Cheers,

Nick, 52TD/63Midget/74MGB
D.G.J. Herwegh

Your right...looks to be before they were painted... The title lists "Taxi Production" so I would assume it was shot at "Car Bodies"
gblawson - TD#27667

Definately Morris Bodies Branch and not "Carbodies" (which was an Austin division at that period).
Perhaps these are Morris Oxford MkII taxicab bodies being made ?

Apparently the Nuffield organisation launched a taxicab under the "Oxford" badge shortly after the end of WW2 (to make matters more confusing; they also had the Series MO "Oxford" family sedan, a completely different car).
However, I don't know if the bodies of these taxicabs were made next to the TD's at the Morris Bodies Branch in Coventry.
Maybe someone with a greater knowledge on the Morris car, can shed some light on this matter ?
Anyway, information on the Oxford taxicab and photos on these links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolseley_Oxford_Taxi
and,

Hope this may be of help,
