MG TD TF 1500 - Distributor Cap, wires, points & coil.

I recently purchased a 1953 mg td that has been in moth balls for 25 years. Got it running pretty good bud when the temp get to about 80-85c it begins to miss. The distributor has the plug wires entering the distributor cap from the side. Inside the cap it says Made in USA. On top of the cap it says remove cap to oil. The plug wires are a yellowish clear wire. The points say Lucas and the coil says Shurhit World's Finest E-40 12 volt. I replaced the plugs. I am trying to figure out where the miss is coming from . If I let it idle for 30 minutes the temps get to 85c and it starts to miss and driving it for 15 minutes it does the same thing. I'm trying to see if there is an electrical breakdown once the car heat up. Any suggestions on what type wires, points, condenser and coil to use I would appreciate . Thanks, BUD

Bud, are the ignition wires a solid wire core or did someone put carbon/silicone wires in place of the originals. Carbon wires deteriorate inside over the years and can loose their effectiveness due to heat build up. Just a thought, as I had this happen once on an old Ford I bought. PJ

Here's Bud's cap. I'm interested in where it might have come from.

As for the wires, I suspect that they are the same ones that came with my car. Clear tubing (when new) with a steel braided cable inside.

Coils are notorious for failing after they warm up, so I would check there first. Coil can get warm to touch , but not hot. Let the car warm up with the hood up and when the miss starts, check the coil temp. If it is so hot you don't want to touch it, it may be failing.

Coil would be my first guess.

Capacitors (condensors) can have notorious temperature issues. Bud

Bud,
This is interesting.
I just remembered where I had seen a dizzy similar to yours! B801

Wonder where that little "box of spares" with the dual SU equipped supercharger ended up?
I know where I wish it was.

Cheers,
David

I had a similar cap on my 1961 OSCA powered FIAT Spyder.

Initially, from the factory, it was aranged with the wire ends facing the fan. If sombody spit a block away the engine sputtered.

I rotated the distributer 180 and swapped wires. That fixed the problem --- most of the time.
