MG TD TF 1500 - Engine stay

What's the best way of setting the engine stay on a 1500TF please?
JK Mazgaj

Assuming everything is assembled, undo the two central lock nuts a little, then adjust the big central nut until you have reasonable clearance between the air filters and the side panel. Check for cracks at the mounting brackets whilst you are there.

I was very fortunate when I put my car back together, as the engine set perfectly without the stay bar in place, pretty much put the unit together without wrenches, only used a wrench to tighten the lock nuts. PJ

I approach it a bit differently. The steady mechanism is there to hold the engine in its "resting" position, not to intentionally locate it anywhere in the engine compartment - the engine and transmission rubbers will locate this "resting" position. If either transmission or engine rubber mounts is soft or distorted, the engine will not sit level and straight.

The rubber pieces are there partly to absorb the engine's vibration; if the steady is forcefully holding the engine to one side or the other, the vibration is more likely to be transmitted through the metal brackets into the car.

Once I have checked or replaced the rubber - front engine mount, two transmission rubber blocks, transmission clevis hold-down rubber (with the concave washer facing DOWN) and front steady rubbers - I loosen everything on the steady - the locknuts, end-nuts and the large barrel nut until there lots of free play. I then rock the engine so it settles into its normal resting position, then tighten the steady mecahnism until the rubbers are just touching the two brackets. I then tighten everything else on the steady, being careful that the tightening process does not shift the engine.

If the air filters rub the bonnet side there is something out of alignment that needs to be identified and redone.
