MG TD TF 1500 - Excelsior Tires

Anyone have any knowledge of this tire in a 550/15? Looks very narrow in the photo. I was looking at the tread design. PJ

Nope. But I did just receive my 2011 Universal Tire catalog and they're in there! Not a bad price. It's either those or Verdesteins.

I have Vredestiens on the MGB, so I was also thinking along those lines. Here is the one I was thinking for the TF, but it only comes in a 175/70R-15. How would this profile on a stock wire wheel? Anybody have that size on their car? PJ

Paul J

Paul,

Universal Tire has them in 165HR15. It is what I was considering for my TD (eventually).

I know of that Excelsior tire in TC size and they are decent quality tires, but I don't know anyone who has used them on a TD/TF. Like the others, I'm also a fan of Vredsteins.

Recommendations for radials to replace my bias-ply tires on my 1951 mg td?

Thanks in advance!
Jerry Chandler

Hi folks,
Here's a pic of our new Vredestien 155 SR 15 82S's (12 mo.s old, but only 250 miles on them, all in the last month). I haven't done any "track testing" but they seem rock solid on the tightish turns at 50 mph +- . Not cheap, but good looking. Will follow with one more pic.

Pic 2, on the ground.

I bought a set of Vredestien tires a year ago and am really pleased with the performance and ride.

I purchased four Michelin XZX 165 15 radials. I had to have tubes, also. So far, so good. My '51 TD rides and handles a bit better than with the former polyester bias plys. These tires are made in France. Perhaps a bit expensive but, they may outlive me!

Jerry,
Where did you purchase the Michelins???? To my knowledge, they haven't been made for many years !Unless they are repros made by Coker,,(not in France),,

Steve, as recently as 5 years ago, the Michelins from Coker were really made by Michelin overseas. Michelin USA has not carried/imported or sold them for many years, but by special arrangement Coker directly imported them. Someone on the board used to work for Michelin- maybe they can answer the question one way or the other. George

As I understand it, Coker has batches of them made periodically. When they run out, you have to wait for more to be made which doesn't seem to be very often.
