MG TD TF 1500 - FITTING THE TD BONNET
Hi Guys, Can anybody help with advice on fitting the TD bonnet (Hood). On removed my original bonnet for repainting. I noticed when removing the chrome centre bonnet strip (Moss part number 453-050 that the inner support bracket ( Moss part number 407-3000 was missing from both ends, being attached only by the outer support brackets (Moss part number 407-200). This had no doubt accounted for the paint damage to the corners of the bonnet. No problem I thought, just put back together as part the parts instructions. However I now se why the previous restorer left these out. It seems impossible to get the inner support to sit inside the chrome centre strip as then the outer support will not sit low enough to use the correct fixings. Does the inner support perhaps sit on top of the chrome strip ? But then it would be called the outer support! It's obvious I need urgent help and advice from you guys out there. How do I fit the mg td Bonnet (or Hood in the case of our US friends) My e-mail address is jackmartin9@btinternet.com Regards Jack |

I don't recall ever dealing with that inner support. If fact, after repainting the '50 TD, it didn't seem to fold freely or lay down properly so I didn't reattach the outer support to the tub. Bonnet now folds nicely and I can whip it completely off in a second. |

When I recently removed my hood, I noticed that the rear inner support was missing...The PO had left me a pile of parts, and I stumbled across it.... Anyway, The front of the chrome strip had the support when I removed it, so I decided to replace the rear one, as well.... I did not have any real problem getting the rear support in place. I installed the front supports in first, very loosely, then lowered the rear of the hood, with the rear supports held in place, and the screws through the holes ( I held them together with my fingers)... Just lowered the rear into place and screwed in the screws.... If you don't use the inner support, the hood will move side to side, and mess up the paint at the notch in the panels. Edward |

I am a long way from installing Little-T's bonnet but I have made a wooden stand that matches radiator and scuttle/firewall contour and length so I can put it all together hopefully preventing scratches and for a place of storage. My center strip has a slight convex bow in it not hardly in the middle. I have gently tried to straighten it but it seems pretty springy, was thinking once together and with all the weight it will lay flat. Has anyone else had this problem or should it be perfectly flat? Regards, Rich |

The inner support is directly placed on the radiator shell, next the chrome stip is placed on the support, then the outer support slips over the stip, with the 'ears' going under the painted bonnet. So at the outer edges, it should be a sandwich- painted bonnet, wings of outer chrome support, inner support, then rad. shell. At the rear, same order except the inner strip sits on wood, not the shell. Perhaps you need to cut a piece out of the cowl rubber, so the inner support is sitting on the wood, not the rubber. If that won't work, something wrong. A couple pictures would help. George |
