MG TD TF 1500 - Front Hub

Checking my front end today and it appears that my left front hub is well worn. The bearings are not a tight fit in the hub so the wheel wobbles. So far haven't felt it while driving but I did feel like there was a a bump in one of the tires as there is a staedy thump, that is why I checked it in the first place.

Does anyone know if these hubs can be welded back up and then machined to the correct tolerance? This is a 1950 mg td so not sure if a later hub would work.

Thanks

The later one piece hub/drum will work fine. There have been drums on ebay recently, check there. Also, Abingdon spares lists used/reconditioned ones. This would likely be cheaper than repairing yours. George

Thanks George, I am aware that the stud thread pattern on the early TD is different from the later ones, hopefully they can be reused easily by pressing them out.

Just use a heavy hammer and tap them out. Best to put a nut on first to protect the threads.

Depending on how much clearance, and how regular it is, there are several LocTite products made to fill gaps up to about .015" or so, like "Bearing Mount" - how 'bout it? Possibly renamed, but the stuff still exists, from industrial bearing suppliers.

Beyond that, or if the hub is beat to death, boring oversize and pressing in a sleeve (with LocTite)is good. Welding on the hub = NOT good, as it is some form of cast iron.

Thanks FRM the gap may be a little large for loctite but machining and pressing a sleeve may be just the thing. The drum itself is in good shape just the hub portion. Brian

I have repaired things by inserting a ring of shim stock with LocTite; press it all together with the LocTite wet. Will last until you remove the bearing again, but it is easy enough to redo.
