MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Pump

After a great day out in my TD2 the fuel pump failed on the journey home. Volts to it fine! Searching the usual suppliers for a replacement I find that high or low pressure pumps are available. Can someone explain the reason please? There are no visible markings on mine to indicate which it might be? Thanks in anticipation of your help, Peter.

The TD uses the low pressure pump. This can raise the fuel but delivers low (er) pressure, so sits high on the firewall. The TF uses the high pressure pump, it is not good at raising the fuel from the tank but serves fuel more quickly. It is based on the off side of the chassis inside the arch and is a pig to get at.

Better to replace like with like, but you may want to go for an electronic mechanism rather than the original mechanical.

Depends on what is wrong. I remove the points and clean them up well with a points file, and get a few thousand more miles from them, depending on what is wrong. No points file will fix a torn or still diaphragm!

I once drove a TB half-way across the UK with a string tied to the fuel pump, giving it a solid jerk whenever it showed signs of rfailing - which was often! Ah, youth...

Ian, Tom, Steve, thanks for your replies. Low pressure pump on the shopping list. I have cleaned the points on the pump, they are shot to pieces, and got in working but I don't want to rely on the repair for the summer. B and G here I come tomorrow and with a shopping list as I have discovered that the back axle seal has failed too. New shoes, etc etc. Must pay more attention! Peter

Don’t dump the old one, have it overhauled. Then u have a spare.

There has to be folks in U.K. that do it.

Get a service kit from Burlen and rebuild it yourself - not a difficult job.
