MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Sender Orientation

Can someone please confirm the correct orientation for the fuel sender assembly? I have it installed with the connector pin at the 6 o'clock position.

Corey Pedersen

Corey-- My car is a 54 TF. The connector pin goes to the 12:00 position, i.e. the top. I have found it difficult to connect the power wire to the sensor when the sensor is mounted on the tank--tightening the hold nut can sometimes twist the pin that causes the magic stuff inside to short. What I have done is to add a couple of lengths of wire to the cars wire harness. I use simple disconnect connections. With this arrangement I connect the extra wires to the sensor while it is on my workbench and then I can easily give the sensor one last test connecting it to the car before I install it on the tank. It may be overkill but it works for me.

Larry, thanks for the input. My fuel tank is not yet installed, so I'll be able to correct the sender position easily. I'll also incorporate your connector suggestions on my workbench.
Corey Pedersen

Corey, your orientation is 180° out. The connector must be at the top. Bud

Thx Bud. I realized last night that I could have determined the correct orientation prior to installation by simply looking at the electrical contacts (or by doing a continuity test). In any event, I'll install it correctly.

I checked this after loose fitting my tank on the car. I also had the orientation reversed, but I wondered if it was actually possible to remove the sender without removing the tank from the car. Turns out it's not that hard a job - if you have the right tool. I dug out an old tiny ratchet screwdriver tool I had picked up years ago and it worked perfectly. It actually took no longer that it would take if the tank was off the car, except you want to have room and a comfortable position under the car when you do it. I had the car already up on maximum jack, so I just scooted under it and easily unscrewed all the bolts, turned it and screwed it all back together. Helps to have a good quality headlamp, too.

Cory (and Larry) - You can eliminate the problem of the output terminal twisting when attaching the wire. The terminal should be secured in place with a 2BA nut, then the sensor wire to the fuel light should have a crimp lug on it that will fit over the terminal, followed with a terminal knob (same as the one used on the SU fuel pump) - the knob is a hand tightened item, not requiring a wrench to torque it down. I have the terminal knobs on hand if you want one. Cheers - Dave
