MG TD TF 1500 - Gas Tank Relining
I am considering relining the tank of my 1950 mg td. It was a collector’s car for many years and sat around with very old gas in the tank. I replaced the sending unit and looked in the tank in that area. It is corroded and flaky. I have read that years ago there was a compound to use by pouring it in the tank and sloshing it around until it was fully coated. • Does anyone know if they still make it and have any purchasing details? • Does anyone know of a commercial establishment in the central Jersey area that does this? |

Most radiator shops will do the deed...i used one that cleaned it chemically and mechanically for 3 or 4 days, then coated it...haven't had a problem since... do be careful as the newer fuels are attacking some of the older coatings. (the whole process was $100.00) |

I did my tank a few years ago with the Eastwood kit. In addition to this kit I needed to buy a can of muriatic acid and rubber stoppers locally. I remember that I doubled the strength of the acid solution, but otherwise followed Eastwood's instructions to a T. After sloshing the acid around in the tank and rinsing it, I was amazed by it's appearance; it was bright silver inside! The only challenge was to find a way to manipulate the tank around so as to slosh the various compounds to all of the hard to reach spots. The tank has a few baffles with faily small holes in them to prevent fuel from sloshing. The final step of applying the sealer was work because of its thick viscosity. I must have done okay because I have never seen another trace of rust in the fuel or filter. Take a look at their website: www.eastwood.com |

Aviation supply houses used to sell a sealer for fuel tanks which is where I got mine. Aircraft have always used unleaded fuels so it is compatible with todays automotive gasoline. Someone might want to compare prices these days. I did mine many, many years ago and it is still doing the job. |

I used the Eastwood kit on my Jag MK2. Great result. No problems since. Cheers Dave |

Jim, Your right, to a point on av gas, but the problem stems from the Ethanol, not the unleaded gas. I use Marine Sta-Bil in my MGs to help counteract the effects Ethanol has on our fuel systems. Ethanol will damage the old style seals. Boaters around here use it to help stop Ethanol from eating the fiberglass tanks. PJ

This company makes good products. I used the kit three years ago. Works well. Coating is hard and aluminum colored. Process takes some care and time. It still is debatable as to whether the coating can get to all the surfaces of the baffles. http://www.por15.com/FUEL-TANK-REPAIR-KIT/productinfo/FTRK/ |

I performed the coating process with a kit purchased from Moss this summer. There are many fine suppliers and Eastwood is certainly among them. The tank has 3 vertical baffles creating 4 seperate spaces. The baffles have approximate 1 inch diameter holes top and bottom. I built a hand turn rottiserie to insure that I was getting complete treatment. The rottiserie was constructed by first cutting 2 large circles from 3/4 inch plywood then tracing the end of the tank and cutting it from the center of the plywood disks. I overcut the holes a bit and slid the disks over the tank, so I could wedge the tank. From there with a handfull of dimensional lumber and sheetrock screws, I was able to make a temporary rottiserie. It made the process bareable and efffective. I still have the device but it would not be worth the cost of shipping when one could make there own. Plan on the coating process taking some time and follow the manufacturers directions religiously. If your tank was ever lined before. There is going to be another step not mentioned in directions which is dissolving and removing the existing assumed failed liner. Ask me how I know. A gallon of methyl ethyl ketone sloshed around for a good period of time is effective. There are some good youtube films of the process but none of a TD/TF tank. A rottiserie was effective to move both treatment chemicals and stones through the baffle holes,to help beat out built up rust. |
