MG TD TF 1500 - Gear Oil

I just read an older posting in another site stating that Redline gear oil should be used in the TD because it does not contain sulfer, which can damage the TD gearbox. Is this valid?
Corey Pedersen

Corey, I have used Redline for the last two years as adviced by board members and it works for me.
Gerard Hengeveld

I use Redline MT90, and in my opinion, it is the best oil
for the box...Has improved shifting dramatically.
Incidentally, I have a few extra quarts, that I would sell for $10/qt, + shipping. (bought too much for myself).

I use Redline MT90 also (about 2 years now) and also noticed an improvement in shifting.

I've been trying to post a response about $10 looking like a good price and that this stuff is available on Amazon at $15 per qt plus shipping but the post won't happen. I have to guess it's something in the content.

There seem to be two Redline MT90, one says its for manual transmissions and is sold by the quart, the says its 75W90 sold by the gallon.

E.B., that seems a good price. The stuff is available on Amazon for ~$15/qt plus shipping.

Search for redline mt90 oil at Amazon.com

There is also a gallon size (maybe pennies cheaper)but it says its 75W90 and it doesn't mention "manual transmission." Same thing? Different? I don't know.

Is this also suitable for the rear axle? The rack and pinion steering box?

Thanks.

75W90 is for diffs (has hypoid additives) MT90 is for transmissions (no hypoid additives)
Rob Edwards

Redline mt 90 is the oil of choice.

The key thing to watch in other oils is they should be GL4 - not GL5 specification.

GL5 has additives that will attack the brass in synchro rings.

FYI - If looking for Red Line products, you can get them here. I've dealt with them many times and the service and shipping is fantastic.

As I mentioned, I still have a few quarts at $10...
I did find that shipping to a business will save money, but shipping is still expensive, as it cannot go by PO.

As per my previous post on this subject, this appears to tick the boxes.

PENRITE
MILD EP GEAR OIL
Codes: MILD001
Issue: October 2011
An SAE 110 extreme pressure automotive gear oil meeting the requirements of API GL-4 for moderate to
high load applications.
Application
Designed for use in all steel gear sets in vintage and classic cars and trucks as well as rack and pinion
steering systems of 1950’s and 1960’s vehicles.
It is suitable for use in spiral bevel, worm and pre 1960 hypoid axles.
Also suitable for use in many gearboxes where a mild level of extreme pressure protection is required and in
worm drive differentials used by early Peugeots.
May be used where SAE 90 grades were originally specified (especially if the gearbox or diff is slightly worn)
or SAE 140 oils were originally specified and the equipment is in good condition.
Ideal for use as an ISO 320 industrial gear oil.
Use with caution if the oil is likely to come in contact with water.

Now I'm confused as your posting speaks of "all steel"
And I thought the issue regarding T-types is that
The gearbox also contains brass parts
( not the gears but synchro components)
Rick

I'm confused, too. Info on the Moss website recommends 75W90NS, which is made to GL-5 specification, for transmissions without overdrive. What's the judgement on that? Here's the link to the Moss info:

Well, the link doesn't work. Go to Shop Supplies on the Moss site, click on "Transmission Gear Oil" and then click on detailed information.

Apologies, I didnt copy and paste every detail stated within the pdf spec sheet for the product.

This should remove any doubt concerning syncho compatibility. The "all steel" statement has to be read in conjunction with "gear set".

Customer Benefits
• Protects against wear
• Good anti-friction characteristics
• Compatible with copper alloy components and protects against corrosion
• Can be used where a SAE 90 grade is recommended.
• Contains a special additive to increase load carrying capacity allowing use where SAE 140 oils were
also recommended.

I spoke to numerous oil company technical advice personnel when I researched the best options available in Aus this oil came out on top. There may be better options OS.

Are all GL 4 gear oils suitable for copper alloys? In other words, is it the additives making it GL 5 that attack copper?
