MG TD TF 1500 - GEARBOX 1st SPACING TO CIRCLIP

Another gearbox question:

The attached picture shows the space between the 1st gear/2nd synchro hub and the circlip (.1118"). Barrie Jones mentions a possible spacer in this space in his video. In fact, he mentions that he made a spacer, but doesn't talk about it further. Mine did not have a spacer, but I can't find any information about how much space there should be there. Almost 3mm seems like a lot of potential movement of the first gear.

I noticed that Bud Krueger had a similar question years ago, but his space was less than half mine.

Any help is appreciated,

I had the same question as you. (And nearly identical photo). I found the answer in this 2012 thread:

Keith McKenzie, Ontario, Canada reply to
JA Benjamin, New Jersey, USA question with photo exactly like yours. About the 13th post in the thread.

I followed Keith's advice and left the gap in my TF gearbox.

I've seen a video somewhere showing 1-2 shift hub in action and it definitely moves along the shaft as it clicks into gear taking any end load off the fork once it's in gear, can't find it----yet but still looking------it needs endfloat to click iin properly

Here you go -thanks to Bob McCluskey

just roll down to the image shown and it goes through the gearchanges showing the hub moving on the shaft

Thanks Lonnie and Willy,

I appreciate the clarity.

Jim,

There seems to be some confusion about the gap between the circlip and the 1st/2nd sliding hub. Here is my observation. This gap is required for the 2nd gear synchromesh to function and it will increase as the bronze synchro ring wears. Adding shims is not a good idea.
In your case you have 0.111" this seems a little high I have measured the gap on a box I have and it is about 0.090" (some old and some reproduction. parts.) I can"t say if 0.111" is unacceptable, but if it is, you will have gear crashing when changing up to 2nd.

Thanks John,

Your advice is appreciated. It seems to be shared by others. It has been a long time since this car has been on the road, but I don't remember a problem shifting up to 2nd. I will go with what I have.
