MG TD TF 1500 - Gearbox Rebuild Info.

In a week or so I am conducting a TD/TF gearbox rebuild seminar and would like to have any and all printed literature on the subject as handouts
To say the least the the TD/TF service book is close to worthless and Horst's book has a few details missing.
I anyone can email or referece me with the "vital" details, I would be appreciative.

Colin,
You may want to contact John Twist at University Motors in Ada MI.He has a very good tech book with lots of information on tranny rebuilds.

Gentlemen:
I just replied to Colin off line but for others that may be interested. MC Car Club sells VHS tapes covering overhaul of the TD & Tf trans. also rebuilding the XPAG engine. For any of you that are interested you can contact John Johns at (jj@octagonbusiness.co.uk). I bought both tapes found them to be very helpful. John is reliable and quick. Payment is through Visa. MC, or paypal. I got mine within a week.

I assume the VCR tapes are standard U.S. spec and not
the incompatible format used overseas??

Gentlemen:
Both Colin and Steve Hess brought to my attention that the e-mail address I included with my last post was incorrect. Thank you to both of you gentlemen. The correct name and address for both the XPAG REBUILD TAPES, and the TD & TF gearbox rebuilding is as follows: John James, at (jjtregalia@octagon.fsbusiness.co.uk) regards,

Steve,

Even if they are to PAL format, any local TV shop can give you an NTSC version for around $6. I used to buy PAL tapes from DUKE (the undisputer king and guru source of motor racing and motorsport media) and they'd always be in PAL (European format). I had a local guy that converted them for about $6.

However all this is for naught as you can get most (but not all) of these tapes in the U.S. from http://www.dukevideousa.com.

I promised to send you one on the MG Story, and I will. Just be patient for an old man (72 on Wednesday).

Now I know why we hit it off. My birthday is on the 14th! Fellow Capricorns. Happy birthday you old fart...I will only be 67!

Will order the tapes in the U.S.

John James who seems to head up the T registry or club in the U.K. was very responsive and helpful when I emailed him. The T-community is reason enough to own one of these "used cars"

Gord, may a great year be in store for you.

I have the engine tape from John. A very good reference to have. It came in a US compatable version.

Colin,
Sorry I missed the first installment of the trans seminar but I failed to put it on my calendar. I spent all day in my garage working on my TD with no interruptions since my wife was in Chicago. Your garage would have been warmer and probably more fun. Let me know when the second installment is.

OK you old Fart's I'm going to be 68 on Sat Jan 22 (Aquarius) which is a lucky thing. I started this Brit car thing by buying a 1952 MGTD in 1956. Drove it as only transport until 1958 when I traded it in on a 1958 MGA brand new at a Brit car dealer in Detroit. I needed a faster car for my monthly trips to Chicago because I would leave Chicago @1A.M. and drive straight to work at the GM (letters are backwards) Tech Ctr. Top down all the way before I94 was complete. When payday was on Fri give clerk $20 and he would faithfully report me as called in sick, before direct deposit days. If you missed payday you MUST be sick. HA HA I was sick with MG fever. Ever drive the Chicago Lakeshore from downtown to Great Lakes Training Center. Fantastic ride in an mga top down all the way. I bought this TD because I want to go out the way I came in, top down all the way!
Have a good year all!

And if I make it two days after Greg's b'day, I'll be soixante neuf. I'm really looking forward to that.

Happy BD G.J

Here's to many more years of top down enjoyment

Part one (disassembly) of the gearbox rebuild seminar is over and it was and informative and interesting experience for all the attendees. One complete gearbox had the shift lever still in place, so we were able show how the mechanism worked while shfting gears and follow the power flow.
Having purchased the VHS Gearbox Rebuild tapes from MG Car Club in the UK, we were able to go through the
dismantle phase in about 1.5 hrs. The gearbox that was to be repaired only had evidence of 2nd gear having two teeth missing. An ill omen as it turned out. Nothing else appeared to be damaged. We did find .050" slop in the mainshaft....not good. It is difficult to inspect the laygear even with a light and mirrors, so you have to take out the first motion and mainshaft for a total inspection.
What we found. Worn layshaft.. replace. Laygear (cluster) had 6 teeth missing on 2nd....replace. Shifter forks worn 030"...replace or repair. (see note below) 1st / 2nd sliding hub worn...replace. 1st gear, chipped and worn....replace. 2nd gear chipped.....replace.
The cost to replace these parts, a gasket set and a few washers and seals from MM was over $2000.00.
I am glad someone gave me this gearbox. They must have known how bad it was when they drained the oil and 7 teeth came out. Great for a demo.
We did get to show how the syncro rings function and what they actually do....quite a revelation to some of the memebers.

All of the 4 gearboxes we had needed throwout bearings.

Lesson 1. Don't depress the clutch while in gear for any time as it wears out the graphite bearing.
Lesson 2. *Don't drive with you hand on the shift lever, it wears out the shifter forks.
Lesson 3. Don't abuse 2nd gear..its expensive.

What's left can be sold on eBay and now our club has a dummy layshaft, clutch alignment tool, (1st motion shaft) modified sliding hub to use for assy.

Next session is to put back together another gearbox that has a suspect 1st gear problem, the layshaft...ouch!
