MG TD TF 1500 - Going rate for an XPAG

What's a good guess on a price of an XPAG? With head and sump. Fellow on another forum asked this and I'm curious also. PJ

I've bought three or four in the last year, for prices ranging from $500 to $1200 - the latter for a genuine 24,000-mile engine, never opened.

yikes! i spent 3x that overhauling mine, (new crank, etc.) but i did enjoy the work. regards, tom

Ah, overhauling! That's a different story, of course. The last TD engine I rebuilt for a customer was $4800, but that was starting with a thoroughjly thrashed engine, and re-doing absolutely everything. I'm not confident I could do it for that now, with machine shop and parts prices what they are.

in 2006 I paid $4000, for a brand new rebuilt XPAG engine with a new moss supercharger. Sold the supercharger so that the engine ended up costing $1800.

A couple of people asked what I did to make a rebuild cost $4600, so here's a list as best I can remember it:

Clean and disassemble engine
To machine shop:
Hot tank all parts
Magnaflux head, block, rods, crank
Measure everything
Over-bore block
Re-surface block and head
Complete valve job (new valves, guides and springs)
Turn crank
Re-size rods, polish beams
Install new front cam bearing
Balance all moving parts to 1/10 gram
Scrape/rod out water passages, drill out rear drain hole
Clean out and brush out all oil gallery passages
Clean-out-tap all bolt holes, smooth all mating surfaces
Rebuild oil pump
Clean out oil pickup
Reground cam, new Isky pushrods, re-surface lifters, new cam bearings
New con rod pinch cap screws and washers
New rod bolts
New head studs
New timing chain, tensioner spring, crank and cam gears
New main and rod bearings (Vandervell)
Lighten and re-surface flywheel, new ring gear and pilot bushing
Brass core plugs (naturally…)
Rebuilt distributor (Advance)
Rebuilt valve gear (Rockerman)
New water pump
New thermostat (in modified original housing)
Re-assemble engine
Degree camshaft timing

Test run

Two weeks ago a complete XPAG went for 750 Euros on ebay in Germany. Disassembled, but allegedly complete and working. Other prices I've seen are more in the 2-3000 range, but those are typically complete ovehauls

... which brings me to a serious point.

Whenever there's a need to replace a crankshaft, we are bound to buy the only one available - the Pheonix - availabale from several sources starting at $2,500. Even the 'garage' discounts are controlled and are limited I believe, to 20%, not the usual 33% or in cases for American car parts, up to 50%.

This seems to me to be absolutely larcenous! Granted, this is a very high spec crank, but B&G list a new 3-brng MGB crank at $176. You'd think that for most of our non-racing engines, we could buy a new crank for $200, and I have often wondered why some American company like The Crankshaft Company, hasn't run a batch.

I'll bet that if a bunch of us collectively bouugt a batch of (say) 50 cranks, the we could get them for a reasonable price. If I could get 17 people to committ to 3 cranks each, I'd be prepared to investigate, including writing the specs and an RFP, but would also need some guidance from someone out there in MG-land to direct me to qualified suppliers.

Gord, you hit the nail on the head. I recently bought a new crankshaft for a Continental ( aircraft ) engine and paid 1250,--. Two weeks later a friend of mine bought a brand new Model A Ford crank : balanced etc for ???? 950,-- As with a lot of so called "exclusive" mg td parts i have the impression we are all grabbed by the b.....
The same counts for valve's , valve springs, pistons etc.
Gerard Hengeveld

Gord, am with you. I have a block with no crank and just cant afford the 2-2500 price tag. If you can find someone to build cranks in the 1-300 range let me know, would be interested. Think others would be tow.
Moldex in MI also does cranks, Dave Zyp had some made a while ago, think mine is one of them cant remember.

Gord, here is moldex site if you are interested

As any of us that's been involved in aviation knows, 1250 bucks for a crank for a small aircraft engine, is an average price and really no comparison to auto parts. Aircraft parts are certified, auto parts are not. JMHO. PJ

Maybe this is a product for MGT Repair? Who is going to look into this? hould I? It does mean a tremendous investment of $...

When helping friend restore a TF in the mid-late 80s, there were no new cranks. We gave up on finding a good used one (no internet then) and jumped for joy when a batch of eternally backordered Moss cranks came out. I believe they were about $950? Consider inflation, and the vastly larger cost of running a business today (ie taxes, fees, health insurance, much higher general governmental sucking of money out for fees and reguations, etc.) $2500 in today's money probably consistent. I remember A and B cranks were really cheap and available, so big difference then as well. Supply and demand? Seems with modern computer driven milling machines price would be less. Whatever, just greatful you can get them. George
George Butz

Question: Are the TD and TF cranks both the same?

Thanks, Frank
Frank Cronin

Frank,
XPAG and XPEG cranks are interchangeable.
Gene Gillam

The MG Vintage Racer folks have been using Moldex cranks for quite a while. Moldex would be able to make you one, though it may take some time.

The T-series racers will have the rod journals made to MGB specs, largely because there are better bearings available for that size. Of course, they are having Saenz or Carillo build custom rods, as well.

Moldex should have the TD specs in hand. 6 or 7 years ago cost was between $1500 and $1700, depending on how much customizing was done.
