MG TD TF 1500 - Goodwood Festival, July 2011

Hello group:

My family and I are contemplating the holiday of a lifetime - a midsummer flight to the UK with the first stop being the 2011 Goodwood Festival in the first weekend in July. After that we'd like to tour - a trip to Abingdon for sure, then maybe the Welsh highlands, or Scotland, or maybe a ferry to Ireland - and if possible we'd like to rent either a manual-box MK II Jag [if the kids come] or an E-Type Coupe [just for us two] for the two or three weeks we're there.

What's the collective experience of the group with Goodwood and exotic/vintage car rental in the UK. It's still a technicolor dream right now, but if it's going to happen, it's time to start planning. Any info on hotels and must-sees and auto rentals would be most appreciated.

Thanks, as always,
Dave

Goodwood - Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancasters, B-17's, fast cars, Glenn Miller and Dorsey - what a trip...

My wife and I enjoyed an absolutely teriffic 6 week tour of England and Scotland back in 2001. We had a basic hire car that we treated like c*ap and parked where ever we felt like, often in cramped spaces in back lanes (England does cramped spaces really well). Not meaning to rain on your dream, but wouldn't a classic simply add a huge worry factor to the trip?

Cheers,
Matthew.

Last time we were in England, we were driving through a little town North West of London and we saw a 1973 T Bird. I swear it looked like a huge truck setting there! Reason it caught our eye was, my wifes car at home was a 73 Bird and here it didn't look that big. Don't know how they got that thing down some of those English roads. We rented a little Ford while there and was very happy with it. I personally wouldn't drive a valuable classic car over there. Streets and roads are too narrow and driving on the "wrong side of the road", (grin), lends it self to a possible disaster, especially on the roundabouts! We had a great time while there! I love the rolling English country side with it's hedge rows and wild flowers separating the fields. One daughter in law of ours came from Eccleshall, Staffordshire. We were there for the kids wedding using wedding cars tunbridge wells also. Lovely people the British, super, super nice! Treated us like we were royalty. I'd love to go back. PJ

Dave, I have to agree with Matthew and PJ re the driving (and parking). Parking charges can be horrendous and with a classic car, secure parking (if available) will be an incredible price. Also I'd think about going to Goodwood at the end of your time. That way it'll be a touch more quiet with the kids still in school in June and if you fancy a classic car hire then take it for only a few days or the last week - that way you will have had a few weeks to get used to the driving. (remember, this free advice comes from an original Albertan who lived in London for 10 years -and drove every day!) .... Chris

Thanks, all of you. Your car-rental advice makes good sense. Besides Goodwood on the first weekend in July, what other car and/or warbird-related events might I look for?

Hi Dave,
the weekend after Goodwood there is a massive warbird show at the Imperial War Museum Airfield Duxford.
See www.fighter-collection.com
It is a two hour drive from Abingdon.
Make sure your hire car has Sat-Nav, with 63,000,000 people in a very small country our road maps look more like a set of varicose veins!!!.and just remember the bit you sit on stays near the centre of the road.
I will let you know if any other shows come up,
Ray

Dave,
There is always something going on at Beaulieu (http://www.beaulieu.co.uk/beaulieu/index) and always worth a look. ... Chris
