MG TD TF 1500 - Gordon Lawson

Sadly, I bring the news of the passing of our friend Gordon Lawson. Gordon contributed his talents and his humor to all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his multitude of friends. We will miss you Gordon. Dan and Sharon Craig

Ouch. While I never met him in person I am going to miss him on the boards and the MG community took a big loss.

I never met him either but he was always generous and helpful on every issue. I will miss him!

Gordon, You were one in a million!

God speed and safe travels, my friend.

I am proud to have a Gordon Lawson steering wheel on my TD. He was a true craftsman and a gentleman to deal with. He will be missed.

I wish him straight roads and blue skies.

Gordon did a lot for this group. Sadly I imagine this will go away soon.

I met Gordon just once at a GOF, but through his postings, considered him a really great person and a super MG car guy. His wooden steering wheels were really a work of art.

I will truly miss his knowledge and posts.

LaVerne. If everyone would select the Customize menu item at the top of this page they can create a car profile and post their picture so we call all see them and their cars. Plus it gives a little more info too.

Perhaps we should all do that in memory of the same catalog that Gordon built and maintained.
Chris Couper

For those unfamiliar,Gord Lawson was a very skilled carpenter. He was a full-time constructor of stages for the Shaw festival in Niagara Falls. He combined his artistic and creative skills with carpentry, hence the lovely steering wheels that he produced.

I had a nice breakfast with him in Gatlinburg TN in 2006. He was active in the Niagara Region British Car Club and the Ontario MG T Register. He also helped maintain the TD and TF dataBases.

In addition to his TD, he also owned one of only two LHD Wolsley 6/90s in North America, which he also lovingly restored.

Indeed a good contributor to this forum. And of course, he shall be missed.

My heart just sunk.
I first met Gordon when he answered an ebay advert of mine for "Free Carpet from hell / TD-TF". Although we never actually met in the flesh I considered him a good friend. So sorry I will never get the chance.

I will miss Gord's sense of humor on the BBS, as well as pm's I got from him. I will never forget when he was first organizing us to post photos of our cars and he would photo shop his little checkerboard TD into the background of our pictures.

My sincerest condolences to his family.
For Gordon: Fair weather and curvy tree lined roads on the road on the other side for you my friend.

You will always be in our thoughts.

Never met Gordon in person, but did correspond off the board a few times. I think he was the first to post video links of his TD exploits on here. What a consummate British car guy, he will be missed. George

Just a wee bit more info on Gord's passing. I've been in touch with some of his friends in the OMGT group.

He passed away on 8 May. Had cancer for some time’. No details yet other than apparently no service and he will be cremated.
Unfortunately he had been sick for some time.

I never met Gordonin person either, but I became hos FB friend some years ago. His postings on FB were about family, his cars, food, and local history. He posted lots of photos where he had photo-shopped old photos into new ones, showing the development - and preservation of private and public buildings in his home town.

May heaven offer you a long and winding road, Gordon!

Real sad. Just today I was showing my newly restored TF and told my friend the steering wheel was made by Gordon - one of the first, if not the first one he made. It will stay on the TF and I will state who made it on my display. He will be missed.

His passing is a real loss. i remember it was Gordons web site that helped get me interested in TD's in the first place . It was a real treat to attend several of his Shaw festival British car displays This was from 2009.He was a real gentleman enthusiast.

Total Shock!

as a member of the Ontario MG T club, I knew Gord well and was a recipient of all the great work he did with the club and for his fellow MG friends. Gord was a gentle person, who was fun to be around and talk to. I will miss him very much along with his trademark checker flag grill.

I too have one of Gordon's steering wheels on my TD. I am so saddened by this news. Prayers for Gordon and his family. He will be missed by all of us around the world.
L Karpman

I see that two of us at least, have his custom made wooden steering wheels over the original frame. He numbered mine on the inside like the first MG, in Sharpie pen serial 251 or whatever MG used for their first one 200 and something in any case. Does anyone know if he made several of these? Just curious. I know he was extremely honest - he told me one of the grip notches had been sanded down too much - and I would not have even noticed. Later he sent some aluminum guards to put over the wires next to wood because he thought it did not look smooth enough. I disagreed and did not install them as his original was fine.
Anyone else know of Lawson wheels?
Keith

For those that may be unfamiliar with Gordon's lovely steering wheels, here is the one he made for my TD. He was a true craftsman and a heck of a great guy. I always enjoyed his "all weather" adventures in his TD, and his love for the beautiful area in which he lived.

L Karpman

A friend I recommended Gordon to, John McElroy in Gouverneur, NY has one on TD21780.

This is the Brooklands wheel Gordon built and used on his TD for several years. I was fortunate to be able to acquire it when he found another project in need of restoration. Haven't installed it as yet - currently on my wall as a piece of art. Now a tribute to a friend too soon gone.

Dan Craig

I have never met Gordon L however very saddened and shocked at his passing.I did have contact with him off line and any request for information was met with enthusiasm and accuracy. The work on refurbishing steering wheels alone was testament to his skills.

Obviously a tough, stoic individual when it came to personal health.

A wake up call for all of us.Enjoy every day to the hilt.

This is what a great guy Gordon was. I emailed him a few years ago to see if he would consider letting Ben Cordsen copy the grab handle from his car. He graciously removed the handle and shipped it to Ben and now several people including me have a set of his duplicated handles.
For those that have the handles think of Gordon next time you use it for support.

It was his grille that was the inspiration for this. I was always impressed with his ability to fabricate the upholstry bits in his TD and some of the variations he made.

MG LaVerne

I never did meet him other than through his posts online, and through a couple of his youtube videos. The varsity jacket in the photos above immediately reminded me of who he was.

I just watched these again, they seem a fitting way to say goodbye:

Thanks Bobby; I forgot about the youtube videos. Last one was just over a month ago - he recorded the spring coming out drive in the replica Lotus 7. Looks like he left us 38 digital slices of life. I'm glad. Dan

I never met the man, but came to know him through his postings here on MGE. There are few people who can gain respect and friendship through postings on the internet, and Gordon was one of them. I am absolutely shocked, not to mention saddened, to hear of his passing. A great loss to the community. He will be missed.
Steve Simmons

So sorry to hear of this loss - I always enjoyed (and learned from) his comments.

Condolences to his MGE friends and his family,
