MG TD TF 1500 - halfshafts
Hi, Over 30 years ago I was told that a YB halfshaft could be shortened to fit a TF. Has anybody done this and are any other mods necessary. (extending the splines etc). Ray TF 2884 |

Hi again, dont want to appear to be shouting but does anybody know. I dont want to buy a shaft and find it is no use. ray |

Ray, You said "I dont want to buy a shaft and find it is no use." If you buy a new "heavy Duty" shaft for a TF, you should be "good to go"! Why try to shorten a YB shaft ???? SPW |

Steve, the main reason is that the Moss-europe price of a shaft is around $250 and the YB one is not. The £ is not what it used to be. Ray |

Try This guy,,,got it from the 2007 archives,,,, Jerry Austin (jdaustinmg@dslextreme.com) is the person who sells the hardened half-shafts on eBay. I don't see any offered on eBay at the moment, but he typically posts a couple for sale each month. I suggest contacting him directly |

Ray -- The on-line Moss catalog shows two half-shafts. One P/N 453-210 @137.95 USD The other has the SAE thread P/N 453-220 @214.95 USD. Abingdon Spares lists one for $141 and change. Does this say that the axles are made in the US? Confused, Bob |

Jerry sells the hardened, improved half-shafts for approximately $100 plus shipping. Contact information for Jerry: http://www.vintagemg.com/technical_assistance.htm Larry |

I have Jerry's halfshafts in Tommy. Torque the rear nut properly... I used 150 ft-lbs, but some say that 80 is fine. warmly, dave |

There are two Moss catalogues. The US/Canada one, and the European one. Even taking into account for the various exchanges, prices are quite different. But the Moss Europe (and UK) show many parts that Moss, North America don't. That being said, Jerry Austin's half-shafts will outlive the car and they are less than $100 US (each). Only the splines and the necks are hardened . The centre section of the half-shafts are actually of a lesser diameter than the stock ones. The reason he gave me is that they are designed to absorb more torque twist and not break, when compared to the stock ones. You can buy them directly from him at the e-mail addr. shown by Steve Wincze. Gord Clark Rockburn, QuƩ. |
