MG TD TF 1500 - Hardware Question.

Holding the headlamp brackets (407-420/410) to the Bracket, headlamp (202-030) is a nut an bolt (321-288). The nuts I have are castillated, see pix.
I dont believe these are correct, since there is no mating cotter pin hole in the screw?

They have a 1/2-BSF hex. Moss does not sell the nuts seperate and the assembly is $13 or $26 for the pair.

I have hex stock which closely matches 1/2-BSF Hex.

Are the castilated nuts correct? If not can sombody provide me the thickness of the nut.

Thanks

Jim B.

Jim,

I have two 53 TD's with chrome buckets. They both have standard nuts that are chromed. I suppose that if you have painted buckets that the nuts should be painted the color of the buckets. Neither of them are castillated. The thickness is about 3/8 inch.

Thanks Mark.

The ones that Moss lists are not Chrome. I believe it has more to do with whether on the the Headlamp support bracket is chrome or not.

The nuts in the bracket assembly of my '50 TD are original and are not chrome eventhough the brackets and buckets are. Best of my knowledge the bolt and nut assembly is painted body colour after assembly even with the chrome brackets.

Jim,

I just re-read your posting. I was thinking about the nuts holding the buckets onto the bracket. The nuts you are referring to are not plated or castellated.

Put them in a lathe, and cut the crown off...Will still work, and you can paint them.
Just a thought.

I thought of that Edward, but If they dont go on the brackets they may go spmeplace else.
Easy to make non castilated ones but How thick?
Or should they be Domed?

Jim,
FWIW
Warning***I have no history on my car.
Both of the nuts are 7 mm thick.

One bolt appears longer but it isn't. The brackets are of different thickness. I snaped a bracket and got a replacement from B & G and it is a bit thicker so the bolt appears shorter.

My guess is the original design had the bolt just come to the edge of the nut with perhaps 0 to 1 thread showing.

OK, I think I was thinking the nut that holds the headlight bucket to the curved arm (bracket?) that runs from about the radiator to the fender. Are y'all talking about the nut and bold that holds the bracketto the thingy that sticks out from the radiator? I think mine are fairly stock (painted black and the headlight buckets are chromed - they may have originally been painted (I'm looking through PO's Moss/ABS orders to see if new headlights were ordered back in ~'74) but I'll post pics showing both the bracket to radiator connection and the bucket to bracket connection but that won't be 'til Wednesday PM EST.

BTW, any value to a 1975 Abington Spares catelogue in pretty good condition with price list? The 7" TD headlight assembly listed for $42.50.

Not sure on size JA but can't think of any castillated bolts other than the front suspension for the TD.

Others will correct me.

PS. I paint mine the color of the headlight bracket, which is the color of the body.

Origianals were painted, and there is suppose to be a lock washer also. The nuts are very thin (7mm probably about right per Mort), looks like yours would be just right with the castleated part ground off. Only other place I would guess they could fit is the front inner A arms, but those may be larger. George

Oops, JA's first posting is a picture of a nut and bolt so I should have known he wasn't talking about connecting the headlight bucket to the bracket.

Ok I made the 7/16 (11.1 mm) but looking at morts picture I think 7 to 9 mm is better.

The paint is not fully dry so I will wait a day and then turn them down. I machined an integral washer.

JA Benjamin

I forgot to add picture.
Mots seem to be about the same as the bolt head. I will cut them down.

Here is the nut and boltholding the bracket to the thingy sticking out from the radiator shroud on my 53 TD. I think the nut measures about 1/4 inch (About NATO 7.62 mm).

The part of the image on the left is reflection. My brackets are painted black even though the car is dark green.

If I am havig someone paint the car how do I get the bolts painted after I have assembled the car? If the bolts are pre-painted I will scar them when I install them.

More than likely. If I had thought of it I would have had them powder coated when I did the bumper bars.

I spray painted my bolts and the wrench took the paint off the heads.

This time I have brushed them. If that comes off I will paint after assembly.
