MG TD TF 1500 - Heat shield

In the link below (a Skip Burns article on cooling a T series engine), there is reference to a heat shield made by Brown & Gammon (in the UK). Does anyone have any photos they can post of this heat shield? Other heat shields? Is I go this route, I'd like to install something that's not an eyesore.

Phil,
If you are having vapor lock issues check the archives on this subject and also search Jet-Hot. I still believe having my exhaust manifold treated by Jet-hot is the best $100 I ever spent on my car and it looks good as well. Take a peek at:

Phil,

As David wisely advises check Archives out, but before you do anything advance your static ignition around 5 degrees - approx 1/4" on the crankshaft pulley. Factory recommended TDC timing was wrong then and is even more so now, with modern fuels etc. Then Jet-Hot, heat shield, insulated float chambers, water wetter etc will all help further.

Good luck, John

Phil, Here is the link-item #11. It shows it pretty clearly.
I also went the Jet Hot route and am very satisfied. It has made a noticable difference in the heat that gets into the cockpit. And as Dave says, After around 6 years, it still looks great. Once it is applied, you can lightly buff it. My timing is advanced a couple of degrees and it runs pretty cool.

David S had his manifold treated back in the dark ages when the prices were low. I believe that the cost is now around $125 - $150 for the same treatment. Be sure to send the mounting blocks with the manifold. If you send them separate, there is an additional charge.

If you are looking to make a heat shield, see the article, T-Series Car Heat Shield in the Other Tech Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ If you are looking to resolve the vapor lock condition experienced after parking the car 10 - 30 minutes after having driven it in hot weather, the heat shield will not have much affect. The problem comes from heat soak from a hot engine compartment and the only thing that will cure that (other than lifting the bonnet while the car is parked) is getting air to move through the engine compartment. Dave S is correct in stating that the Jet Hot treatment of the exhaust manifold will minimize the problem, as will an electric fan that runs after shut down to push the heat out of the engine compartment. John is also correct in stating that a bit more advance of the ignition will reduce the heat generated by the engine, which will help somewhat. Cheers - Dave

I contacted Jet-hot last week and they quoted me around $200 to do my exhaust manifold! Has anyone tried the Eastwood High Temp Coatings as an alternative?

Rod - The Jet-Hot coating is a ceramic coating both inside and outside the manifold. Besides some insulation on the manifold, it is purported to move the hot exhaust gases through the manifold quicker so that there is not a great of a heat exchange through the manifold. The advantage of this is a cooler engine compartment, the advantage of a cooler engine compartment is less problems with vapor lock due to heat soak. Dave S (who by the way was the smart one to get his manifold done while it was cheaper) has reported less of a problem with vapor locking since he had his manifold Jet-Hot treated as have several other people that I have heard from. I have one gentleman down in the Napa Valley, who I did a fuel pump for this winter who was asking about the vapor locking problem, since he has experienced a lot of vapor locking (as is to be expected in that area). He is going to have his manifold treated and promised to get back to me as to the results. Cheers - Dave

To be perfectly honest, my Jet-Hot coating was done for more cosmetic reasons than promoting a cooler engine compartment. I still get a bit of vapor lock on shutdow, however it clears quickly if I start it on choke. I never have problems when underway. I have also noted much more heat traveling down my new stainless steel exhaust. Since my car was rebuilt and all these systems replaced, I don't have as good of a baseline as some of the others who've professed great results. But I would do it again in a heartbeat, just for how good it looks. I chose the matte gray finish.

warmly,
dave

If you want to go with the original sprayed aluminum finish contact Jim Doughtery (sebring222@aol.com. He's setting up shop to provide the service...I believe he's advertising in the British Marque now. Cost is around $160 if I remember correctly.

And if you go with JetHot ask for their *sparkle* finish. It's not advertised but is available (at least here in Mississippi) and is a nice soft, non-glossy aluminum finish.
