MG TD TF 1500 - Help Please

Starting the final phases of completing my 1250 TF restoration and struck a problem understanding how the steering column adjustment clamping mechanism functions.

Silly question, what does the Clamp Assembly (Moss 263-320) clamp. The internal diameter of the untensioned clamp that was with the vehicle is 1&1/8". steering wheel splined shaft diameter 7/8".

Do I have an incorrect clamp or am I missing something in the assembly schematic diagram?

Cant seem to locate a close up photo of this part of the car, appreciate if somene has an image of the assembled components.

Thanks in advance for your advice and assistance.

There are three clamps on the steeing column assembly. The smallest chrome one clamps the splined joint. Another chrome clamp (I would guess your 1-1/2" clamp) attaches the outer column to the under dash bracket from the roll hoop ( I think- different than the TD arrangement), and the last under the bonnet- raised area of the column to a long bolt on the firewall. Hope that makes sense. George

I meant 1-1/8th clamp, I shouldn't post before coffee!

Thanks George for you input, I did some further research today with some assistance from an Aussie Mg restoration guru.

What had occurred with this car was that the steering column external sleeve had been longitudinally misplaced into the car so that none of the main internal column shaft protruded from the end of the sleeve. The main internal shaft is what the clamp assembly clamps to, once this is protruding from the sleeve all becomes clear as how this is designed to operate. The illusive key that prevents the ability to inadvertently remove the steering wheel becomes apparent.

The external sleeve position is adjustable,it was recommended to set it so 1" of the internal shaft protrudes.

Traps for the uniniated are still an ongoing learning curve.
