MG TD TF 1500 - Hope this will make life easier

I attach a photo showing the dash loom I have made up incorporating plugs. The ammeter will be wired with continuous cable because of the high current. Hope this will make life easier when I fit the dash tomorrow.

Probably a wise idea. I used the 'I will never be back here again' concept and it was not more than two months and I was 'back there again'.

Is there perhaps a wiring diagram showing how those wires are incorporated into the female plugs and the same for the male ends?

Great idea will definitely use it when I get to wiring. Thanks

I simply used a photocopy of the original wiring diagram and literally laid out each wire on the car/chassis. What was useful though was to white out each wire on the diagram with typists correction fluid after it had been laid out on the car. When I was left with a blank sheet of paper I knew I hadn't missed any wires! I used modern thin wall cable but in the correct colours. I fitted relays for the headlamps and auxiliary lights so the wires behind the dash merely do the signaling. I also swopped over the aux and panel switches and configured the wiring so the panel lights come on with the side lamps and the single position switch, now labeled P, controls the map lights. The double position switch now controls the auxiliary lamps - position one fog, position two fog and spot. What pleased me most was the Tessa tape I used to bind the loom. It is cheap, easy to use and looks first class. All the wire and fittings came from Vehicle Wiring Products (www.vehicle products.co.UK).Their catalogue is invaluable and contains all the info needed to calculate wire sizes.

All does not look correct. Why was the ammeter not included in your harness?

Looks good, Jan. Not very LUCAS´ish, though ;-).
The Tessa tape you mentioned - is that the one that looks like cloth ? Similar to old Bike Handlebar wrappings ?

Looks great, Jan. I plan on incorporating a multipin connector for ease of use next time I have to dive into the electrics. I also intend to include a quick release connector for the oil meter so that I can pull the whole thing out quickly! (My 51 TD has a separate aftermarket water temp meter mounted under the dash.)
But that's several projects away for me right now :)

Sandy, you missed the 2nd sentence in his first post.

It's apparent that the second sign of old age is not memory loss.Jumping to conclusions is the third sign.

I have a 50A Dynalite alternator fitted and this was one of the reasons I decided to make a loom up myself. I have heavy duty wiring for the charging circuits and power feeds to the relays. There are also extra fuses hidden under the redundant control box cover. As yet I have not been able to uprate the ammeter so have decided not to use it until I can sort something out. I managed to buy a 60 - 60 meter at an autojumble but then found it is bottom pivoted. Maybe I can swop over the shunts. At least it will be easier to remove the instrument panel when I attempt the conversion. I would still be concerned though about a plug/socket, in a high power cable, behind the dashboard.
Yes the Tessa tape is the one that looks like, and actually is, cloth. Once carefully wrapped it looks excellent. I first saw it on a Morris Minor site and some Minor owners had painted flecks and the finished job looked almost the same as an original braided loom.

Hi Jan,
I think you have a great idea and it will certainly make any future electrical maintenance a lot easier. It appears the speedo and tack are located in the centre panel. What vehicle does this panel belong to?

Hi Jan,
About 30 min. after sending the above, the light came on, and I realized that you must have a TF. Thanks for your reply, and I hope the new wiring design is successful.
