MG TD TF 1500 - How to put on the top
I have a friend with a TF that is up to put on a new canvas top on his TF. Is there a good instruction of "how to do it yourself" somewhere on the internet. He would be very greatful if there is! Best regards Anders / Sweden ![]() |

Anders Your photo shows a TC (or earlier), not a TF. I installed the Moss top on my TF using the instructions that came with it (available on the Moss website) along with Restoration Guide to the T Series. Tom '54 TF |

Anders, Go to my website, http://www.dbraun99.com and visit the mg td15470 restoration section, and find the weather equipment section. A bunch of installation photos and ideas there. warmly, dave |

Hi Tom, My friend has a TF. The photo shows me in the TC that I and my father restored some twenty years ago! I started to think the other day, if we began to put on the hood from the windscreen or the opposite and I believe that we started in the rear part. But as I haven't seen my friends TF i wasn't sure if it looks the same. Thats the reason for my question. I am at the moment working with a MGA 1600 Mk1 and my father, now 81 years old, with a 1938 TA Special, built as a Q-Type. I send some photos. And thanks Tom, I will check Moss, and the link to your website Dave. Regards Anders |

Hi Tom, Sorry for sending one more comment! I coulden't find any instructions on Moss website concerning how to get the hood on! Is there a special restoration guide part somewhere on the website? Regards Anders |

Anders, What a handsome pair, the owner and the TC! I have the printed instructions in front of me, but I could not find them on the website now. In the past they were. It is called "MG TC/D/F top kit instructions" listed as part number 980-001. If I were not leaving on vacation tomorrow, I could try to fax it to you. Perhaps someone else can. I found it a fun challange. The end result looks very good to my eye! Tom '54 TF |

Here is a picture of a TF where I just did the hood. The first thing to do is the front bow over the windscreen. The next things are the support strips and then you work the hood on from the rear. The Moss instructions are quite good, but I had to read them about 6 times to "get it". It came out pretty good. An important factor in all this is whether you are also doing the side curtains or whether you are retaining the old ones. Be sure to make a couple key measuremetns on the frame position as noted in the instructions. I'm out of town for a few days, but I could scan the instructions and e-mail them to you when I return. Hi Anders, I mounted a Moss top two Years ago. The top I got was already bought by the former owner of the car back in US. I have many pictures that show each step in the process. My only problem was, that the border of the top to the side windows still has some wrinkels, which I was unable to remove. I hope the wrinkels will disapear. On the other side life is best with the top down - even if it rains :-) My Brother in law, got a top from Moss in UK. This top was completly different - even it was for a TF as well. Specially the weather flap, was a lot more simple than the US version, finally the color is also different, it is more brownish. I would be curriuos to se your top. If you want I can send you the pictures, just drop me a Email on ove(at)wiuff.com Regards Ove ![]() |
