MG TD TF 1500 - I'm a sinner

Yes, I am a sinner.

When I rebuilt my XPAG 2 years ago, I installed a pertronix ignition system but did not (this is the part I'm confessing about) change my spark plugs and in fact, used the N8s from the previous engine.

Now I think its time to get serious. What is a modern replacement for the N8? Is Platinum the way to go? What about 2 electrodes? Or a ring electrode?

I've got to be careful because the engine side of my head has been milled a little into the plug cavity, and the long N8 seems to be OK so far, but is there any risk that any other plug might be longer and impinge below the head gasket?

I'm obviously not up to date on spark plugs - help!

I have been researching the best modern plug types and pinned it down to Champion N5C or NGK BP6ES set at .028".
Hope this helps

Gordon;
One way to tell if your plugs are protruding too far into the cylinder is to check the first threads on the end of the plug.They normally are clean but if it protrudes too far into the cylinder then carbon fills in the exposed threads you can tell that way.

Hello John.

Thanks for the benefit of your research, but isn't an N5 a little cold? I suppose the old addage colder is safer but this means getting the engine quite warm; and .028 seems large, but I am considering the Pertronix 'Second Strike' ignitor if it is available in +earth.

What the heck, for a few bucks, I can try both the N5s and the NKGs.

Sandy, your idea is good, except that the carbon is removed when the plug is withdrawn, and I really don't want to remove the head each time to check the threads! But I am going to go out this morning and have a second look. Maybe there's some tell-tale brown on the ends.

Gord,
The BP6ES work well with my TD that has the pertronix & 40,000 flame thrower coil.

The N5C is the modern equivalent of the N8. I set the gap at .028 because I have fitted a Pertronix Ignitor.
