MG TD TF 1500 - inner floorboard rail attachment

Hi all,
As you can see in the picture below there were 2 screws holding the rear inner floorboard rails ('50 TD) to the chasis on my car, one per side. There was the traditional rotting felt stuffed in there as well. I'll be replacing that with either Bitchathane or camper shell tape, not sure which yet. My question is why are the 2 screws sticking up so high? The rails are not tight in the rear because of this but this is as far as the screws will screw in!

Possible reasons:
1. I haven't padded under the rails yet.
2. PO used the wrong screws?
3. There should be washer(s) under screw head?
4. Some other reason?

All opinions are welcome! I know, Dave B. has a picture but it's just out of range to see details.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed - Those two screws go through the floor boards, the drive shaft tunnel, the rails and then into the threaded angles. Cheers - Dave

Dave, not for me they don't. There are no such matching holes in the tunnel. I thought of that. And they're not long enought to go thru the floorboards, that's for sure. These 2 only hold the rails down, not the floorboards to the rails. Thanks for looking though!

Ed, I have to disagree with David. The two screws you show should go flush to the bracket and hold the rails in place. Look at picture 44 in the mg td15470 Restoration » Tub and Wings » Floors section. Either you grabbed the wrong screws, or something is wrong with the threads.

Here is an unpublished picture from my restoration showing the hardware that attached the floor rails.

Warmly,
Dave

I agree. Those screw holes should be counter sunk, mine are and the screws are very short and are there to hold just the rails in place, no wood. Sorry, don't have a photo of them on mine. PJ

Shot of the rails & screws. Screws are very short and flush with surface. PJ
