MG TD TF 1500 - Insuring a 1951 MG-TD

Hi. I own a 1951 MG-TD. It has not be registered or insured for a number of years. It is not currently in working condition, but I’m trying to get it back on its feet (or tires).

My first challenge is to get it insured, and for that I need something that is the equivalent of an early 1950s VIN. I have a body number (3049 60308), but the body type is hard to decipher on the plate that is attached to the body. Do you have access to a list a body numbers that will enable you to fill in the missing pieces of body type, engine number, etc.? If so, I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. If not, is it the engine number that I need for the insurer? And where can I find the engine number?

Thanks for your help!

On the Left side of the frame, just ahead of the suspension, on a frame member called the Dumb Bell, you will find the VIN or Chassis number stamped.

This is what is used, or should be used for the registration.

On the battery box there should be should be two brass plates.
One will also have this number along with the engine number.
Do not use the engine number, in fact it my not match.

There should be an engine number on a hex shaped plate under the manifold on the right front of the engine.

This may or may not match the brass plates on the battery box.

Attached is a pix of the stamped numbers on my TD.

Jim is spot on. Over here I believe the member that carries the chassis number is referred to as the dumb iron. The brass plates that Jim refers to were originally nickle plated with the lettering filled in with black paint. There are a couple of good shots on Chris Couper's site, The Original MG TD midget. Now Jim, you know that the engine number plate is octagonal rather than a "hex" shape!

Best wishes to you Nancy as you register your TD! The proper car type would be listed as " MG Midget - Series TD"

Make: MG
Model: Midget - Series TD

Hope that is of some help

Best regards,

DLD

YES!!!!!!!!!!

Too many DUMB pills today.
